In this informative YouTube video Father Fish explains three methods of breeding guppies. Viewers are guided through the fascinating world of guppy breeding, exploring these key techniques: line breeding, inbreeding, and selective breeding. The engaging presentation breaks down each method, shedding light on the intricacies involved in obtaining desired traits within guppy populations.

"Line breeding" is discussed as a method focused on maintaining specific traits within a lineage, ensuring the continuity of favorable characteristics. The video delves into the nuances of "inbreeding," highlighting the advantages and challenges associated with breeding closely related guppies to intensify certain traits.

The spotlight then shifts to "selective breeding," where the audience learns how deliberate choices are made to encourage the reproduction of guppies with preferred traits. Father Fish employs clear visuals and examples to illustrate each breeding method, making the content accessible to both novice and experienced fish enthusiasts.

With its comprehensive coverage and expert insights, this video serves as a valuable resource for anyone interested in the art and science of breeding guppies for specific characteristics in aquariums.

I'm the adult perpetual 12 yo who LOVES fish. I enjoyed this video!! Guppies are one of my FAVORITE fish. I have been studying them for years now and am still learning.
Some important tips when it comes to breeding:

1)Females like a lot of natural growing greens for their babies. I make 1/2 of my tank thick with a variety of growing plants.
2)Females like to have as much high quality food as they want. I feed high-protein granules for guppies.
3)Females like to have a few girl buddies in the tank with them even if the other girls are not pregnant. Preferably no boys.
4)When my female starts to have her young, she isolates herself into the plants. I offer small snacks if she eats the snacks. She usually does. It helps with contractions and to not eat the babies. Last night I fed about 12 little meals while she had her 30+ babies over the course
of hours. I am careful not to disturb her. I first feed her buddies at the other side so they won't race over to momma and take hers, lol.
5)When the babies start coming, I lift gently them out with a small cup and/or turkey baster, if it does not disturb the mom. CAUTION:
turkey basters work great however the baby will often drop to the bottom of the baster quickly. Have a cup right there to put them into it. If the baby is high up in the turkey baster, I put my finger on the bottom of the baster to stop the water going out. Just watch for the baby. I have enough water in the cup so the baby won't hit her/his self when landing. I put ALL the babies together is a small container with a few plants. They feel safe together.
Guppies are very sensitive and can get easily stressed. Mine have had a lot of babies and I just wanted to share what I have
learned.😊

Great video! I've kept several guppy breeding colonies over the past 2.5 years, and consistently the ones that do the best are the ones I interfere with the least!

I was that 9 yr old once! Guppies my first ever fish! The joy and wonder of experiencing many live births. All the rainbow colors….Loved that metal framed slate bottom 10 gal tank with a corner filter of charcoal and angel hair. I’d love to have that tank back. 😁☮❤🐠🦐🪴

I just started selective breeding. I had three moscow blue...and one of the babies came out with an orange stripe and teal stripe on its side. So i deceided that was my special guy last forward i now have an salmon colored female which came from them...and i will breed with one of last years blue and orange males.
Never know what's in the genes! Its so exciting to see.

I'm doing a fourth method, i call it the "let em breed" method. I started with 6 standard females and 2 different breeds of male, a standard and an endler (looks like a lyre tail but with a transparent webbing between the tail's flares). They bred a bunch of unique rainbow coloured snakeskin patterned ones, spotted rainbow ones, metallic blue-green ones, and none of them look even remotely similar to the starting two males. The idea now is to simply "let em breed" with no interference, to see just how intense the color patterns can get!

I luv guppies. I had a 70 gallon tank full of them, they were so beautiful to me. I had the one side of the tank near a window and when the sunlight hit them their skin was nothing more beautiful. I just let them populate as they wish 🐠

Yes, It's always exciting to breed different colors to see what we end up with. Sometimes we don't even try and end up with some unique one's.

Really interesting. I have to admit I would be nervous to look after guppies again. I had them as a teen. After the joy of waking up to fry for the first time and seeing them grow to different variations, the breeding didn't stop. Overstocking worries kept me awake at night. A bit weird for a teenager I know! But I really bought into the shopkeepers advice and if something was wrong it was my fault for not buying x y z chemicals/products. I've only just started up again decades later, these videos help me understand what I didn't know back then.

And when I was 12 and 1963 my best friend's grandfather had a probably a hundred fish tanks and he raised guppies yes fancy tail guppies and also had a couple saltwater tanks and a house the point in key largo Florida we used to go down almost every weekend and get salt water from the ocean and some sergeant major babies or whatever else we could find on the marshes. That's when I first got into aquariums and stopped for a while but in May of 2022 a couple months after my 19 year old dog passed away bye I decided to get another fish tank because they were half price at PetSmart and after a couple weeks I bought some guppies and have kept plants in the tank that float because the ones that I planted in the gravel kept dying and that's what I have been dealing with every time I buy plants I get guppy babies and now I have found you and I can tell you that I love what you do and appreciate you so much because I have very limited income at the stage in my life I really want to give my fish a natural biological tank and you are amazing and I ordered some plants and some substrate and I'm going to try my best to set this tank up properly as you have taught. I ordered from you and am still waiting for my shipment but I am so looking forward to it and thank you so so much

1 inch soil. 3 inch sand. pearl weed carpet with water sprite border jungle. she is a beauty my 55 gallon tank the 6th tank that I had set up, dust algae on the side panels but I well a bit of chaos. now with my method perfected in what plants work best for my water I bought 2 penn plax breeder boxes and have 2 guppies that are pregnant. with the ecosystem semi mastered (i havent pulled off no filter yet) i want to tackle breeding. already seen 1 and 2 fry around the tank make it adulthood but i want to nurture 30, 40 even 50 at a time. you cant see it but there is a gaping smile on my face just thinking about it. love that i stumbled on your videos a year ago and ill keep watching for more inspiration
