I think that something that helps is that it both looks like part of the screen but also drawn on, both imply that someone thought that it was docile and friendly

This makes me imagine a ghibli-style movie where a little girl discovers that the scary looking alien-robots are actually very nice (she sees one inspecting flowers and she gives them one as a gift, to which it picks one and gifts it back) so after they spend a few days together she draws that little face on one of them so her parents (and eventually, the soldiers) won’t be so scared of them

Point is he saved (there in a apocalypse ) a kid so the kid grew up to the age of 7 when they were becoming freinds and he drew the smile a few days later bandits came killed the boy and now the robot seeks vengeance always keeping the smile there to remind him of his lost freind. Boom 5 sec story done
