The solution becomes easier when you figure out that 3² + 1² = 10, so that a right triangle with sides 3 and 1 gives a hypotenuse with length square root of 10. :)

Well the letter E is made out of 10 grid squares
A 3x3 square has a perimeter made out of 8 grid squares and an area of 9 grid squares
And a 4x4 a perimeter made out of 12 grid squares and an area of 16 grid squares
And because no overlapping is allowed the square we need to look for is neither a 3x3 nor a 4x4. In other words, it is mandatory to cut the letter E not through the grid, and cut it in a more unconventional way

If you cut the top and bottom legs of the E diagonally then the hypotenuse will be sqrt(10) units long for each triangle you get by cutting like this. This leaves the middle section of the E as just 4 squares in T shape.

You can arrange the triangles with the sqrt(10) edge on the outside which creates a 10 units squared area square with a tilted square hole inside of 2 by 2 length sides which the remaining 4 E peices can easily be fit into.

You can leave part of the middle T piece attached to one of the triangles to do this whole thing in only 4 cuts but I'm not gonna try and explain that in text form.

its easy if you create a 9 square and a 1 square, but i guess that isnt the purpose, the 10 square is hard with 5 pieces it would have to be 3, 16227766 in width and height if i understand the puzzle correctly, and i dont know how to do that with only 5 pieces
