My bother was the same way ended up a professional keyboard player. Plays by ear. 👂🏻 yes learned to read and theory.

My grandmother was an excellent pianist. She played piano for the silent movies back in the day. My dad wanted her to teach me. She said she didn't really know how to teach someone else though. She got a Kimball piano when she was 6, so that would have been about 1917. We had that piano in our basement when I was growing up. Wish I still had it. I always wanted to play the drums though, lol.

Not all houses had pianos in the UK. In fact to this day I've have never lived in or know of any friends or family that has had a piano in their house and I've been around 68 years.. I think it was am item only the middle and upper class could afford rather than working class families
