I don't think you thought this through. Try it again at various times of the day and you'll get completely different results.

What you want to do is look at the stick's shadow at noon. That will give you the perfect true north. Otherwise, your results will vary a lot depending on the time of day and your latitude. The more south you are, the better the results. But where I am it's no good.

If you know your latitude you can correct the result but you need to know the math.
