This Is Why the U.S. Can’t Use the Oil It Produces

In the past year alone, the US produced an average of 21 million barrels of petroleum per day. At the same time, Americans only consumed about 20 million barrels per day. That means, in theory, there’s more than enough oil being pumped out of US soil to cover the country’s entire energy needs. Yet, despite this, the US still imports millions of barrels of oil from other countries. In fact, a big chunk of those imports come from OPEC nations—the same group of oil-producing countries that are famous for controlling global supply and prices.
So that raises a big question: if the US produces enough oil to be self-sufficient, why does it continue to rely on foreign oil? Why does America still import oil from the Middle East, from Venezuela, from Canada? And on top of that, why does the US export so much of its own oil while still buying from other countries? If the goal is energy independence, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep American oil in America?

It’s all about too many regulations in America to refine its own oil. It would take about 20 years just to get a permit to build a new refinery

Tell it like it is. We can not use our own oil! It the wrong kind, its sweet crude and our distillers cannot distill it!! Plain and simple. Look it up.

Somebody's math is not mathing and right. If you divide 20 million barrels a day and 36 billion barrels in reserve, that gives you 1800 days' worth of oil. If you divide 1800 days by 365 days that leaves you with less than 5 years' worth of oil, your numbers are not Mathing.

Our American oil is a paraffin base. It is a heavy crude. Arabian crude is a benzene base, making it a light crude. (However, American Crude can be refined). It just takes longer because it is more involved. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "CAN'T REFINE."

I thank you for this presentation on oil in America and its refineries and process. Lesson absorbed.

Eye-opening breakdown! 🇺🇸💡 It’s crazy how the U.S. produces so much oil but still faces limitations on using it domestically. Between refining capacity, export contracts, and politics, there’s a lot more to this than most people realize. Great analysis!

One thing forgotten.
Fracking is the unhealthyst way to get to that stuff. Bad for the people around and letal for the enviorment.
Not every nation likes to destroy its own country.

it is not because you cannot distill it. the reason is MONEY. it is more profitable to sell it than to buy it from your allies or, former allies

Boy do I remember the oil crisis of 1973. We had been paying 35 cents a gallon. We thought we were going to collapse. We sat for hours in line to get 10 gallon. 50 cents a gallon felt crushing.

I think the plan was to finish the oil in Mexico, Venezuela and every large oil producer. Sorry orange man !!! There will be no "drill baby,

We have them but not enough of the right kind of refineries. We ship it off to be refined and then bring it back. If we had lower gas prices, we would cause refineries to close down because they can't operate profitably. That's why some had to close when oil was real low.

Let's be honest: we can't use our own oil! It's the wrong type—it's sweet crude, and our refineries just can't process it. Plain and simple. Look it up.

currently we cannot use the oil we produce. we once used it during WWI. what happened was oil producers discovered that they could get lower quality crude oil for less money from foreign producers. our oil must still be good because we sell it to other countries that use it. looks like it is just a refining difference. why can't we modify our refineries to use this sweet crude. is it something that might temporarily change the profit margin? it is always profit over practically why use what you have when you can get it from someplace else for less while selling our own crude for more causing a synthetic shortage. at one time our distillers could crack our own crude, and it looks like they may need to start doing it once again.

Canadians love our cars too & trucks. So we need a special mix to run an engine up in the frozen North, Yellowknife & above! This keeps the engine from seizing up. Some vert Northern places may have been heating their homes with oil too, way up North in Canada!🎂🥮

For those of us old enough to remember the Viet-Nam war. After the war, Nixon was afraid of a recession, what with not as many men being drafted, drastically cutting back on miltary contract for weapons/ammo/uniforms etc. The rummor was that Henry Kissinger made a deal with Saudi Arabia. The US would buy oil from the Saudis only. Saudi Arabia would then use that money to buy weapon systems from the US, thus keeping the military plants running and stave off your after war recession.

Of course, Yom Kippur war came around and that plan was shot to hell.
