Exploring Greece

The Panathenaic Stadium or Kallimarmaro meaning 'beautiful marble is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. In 330 BC, it was built on the site of a racecourse for the Panathenaic Games, and was later rebuilt entirely in marble by Herodes Atticus. It was abandoned after the rise of Christianity in the 4th century AD and was largely abandoned. Upon its excavation in 1869, it was refurbished and hosted the Zappa Olympics a year later. The first modern Olympics in 1896 was held there, as was Greece's most recent hosting of the 2004 Olympics.
