Even if the truck stopped, the impact shouldn’t have been as severe. I don’t know for sure but it seems like the driver who crashed into the truck was distracted.

Sometimes pedestrians change their mind and start crossing to different direction and it happens like that.

It wasn't too late, the driver simply wasn't paying attention.
Its always on the driver to pay attention to all surroundings

It’s hard to tell how the lights and crossing signals are setup the way this is shot. The pedestrian may well have had a do not cross signal. In any case, note that the truck was most of the way across the street and then stopped before the pedestrian even came into view. The guy walking may well have just turned and stepped out onto the road against a do not cross signal without even looking to see if it was safe. This happens all the time where I live because it is a tourist area and the crosswalks actually have signs in the middle of them stating stop for pedestrians. Many of us who regularly drive around the area try very hard to follow this rule. Some even stop at crosswalks when there is now one crossing. Pedestrians have to understand that having the right of way does not mean you do not have to check to see if you are noticed. Give us a half second. If I’m only twenty or thirty feet from the cross walk and you are doing a sudden turn and cross from behind a parked car or other traffic (even at 20 mph or less as it is in my area) than there the is a good chance you are in the blind spot of my A pillar and I wouldn’t be able to stop even if I do see you. If the traffic is not already waiting at a standstill for you to cross, stop for a half second at the crosswalk so your intentions are known. Peak out and look the direction of the traffic if you can. The life you save may be your own. Also stop just standing at the crosswalk until with no intention to cross. It is very confusing. Again, I say all of this knowing it is hard to see what actually happened in this case.

As for the pizza guy, it would seem somebody was planning to blast past the back of that truck with no regard to the fact that something may keep them from completing their turn. There was plenty of time to notice that truck was stopping suddenly.

Not late to spot. Oblivious pedestrian doesn’t look at traffic before stepping into crosswalk. Right of way by a pedestrian doesn’t negate situational awareness

Here in this predicament if the driver saw that there was pedestrian trying to cross the street he should have made the turn in the first place he should have waited and then when the pedestrian cross then he should have made the turn
