Jinjer - Who is gonna be the one

I have seen Jinjer twice live - July of last year and a month ago. The show last year was in a small outdoor beer garden venue in which they were headlining. There were three opening bands, all with male harsh vocalists. None of them got as low as Tatiana. In fact, in one song (I think Vortex) she got so low that I actually felt the rumble in my gut. At the most recent show, I paid for the VIP which was limited to 15 people. As part of the VIP, Jinjer played two songs in full right after their sound check. The 15 of us were right on the rail in the empty venue and I was right in front of Tatiana, who was no more than 10 feet away. The second song they performed for us, which they were not going to play later that night, was Pisces. I guarantee that her harsh vocals were just as was heard in this video, if not even lower. I enjoyed her clean vocals more than in the video because there was no doubling (or pitch correction). The only change from the video is that she didn't go into the belt towards the end - she stayed with the harsh vocals. She sang Pisces to us like she was in front of 15, 000 instead of just 15.

Elizabeth Zharoff (The Charismatic Voice on YT) is spearheading an in depth study of harsh vocals that will take place at the University of Utah. The initial study will involve six metal vocalists, half of which are female - Tatiana Shmayluk of Jinjer, Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy and Melissa Bonny of Ad Infinitum. I have no doubt that this study will discover how these women, and others like them, can produce harsh vocals that are lower than what their anatomy would seemingly be able to allow.

Excellent reaction and analysis. I'm an old rocker and longtime musician who was stuck in the past until a couple years ago when I discovered reaction videos and then Jinjer. I quickly fell in love with them, and was fortunate to catch them live just two weeks after discovering them. They're my favorite band since Rush retired. I saw Rush 36 times live. I just saw Jinjer for the fourth time. They set the bar for live performance standards.

As hard as it is to believe, that little woman can indeed produce those sounds without effect. They used the usual studio stuff e.g., delay, chorus, double tracking, compression, EQ, etc. But nothing to alter the perceived tonality or pitch of her harsh vocals. Most experts contend there is no actual pitch involved. The perceived pitch can be changed using a variety of methods involving the tissues and cavities of the body, neck and head aside from the actual vocal cords. Proper microphone technique and amplification enable a relatively quiet sound to become the roar of a lion.

Tatiana is a unicorn. She is self taught, with minimal instruction. She doesn't know how she does it. She doesn't take the greatest care of her voice. And yet she can do so many beautiful things with it. Her expressive range is elite. As a singer and a student and aficionado of the human voice, Tatiana's is my favorite singing voice on the planet. Enjoy!

Jinjer - Pit of Consciousness (Live in Kiev)
the best performance and the best growl

The 2 scream samples you used are from a much younger tatiana, she has over time developed a much deeper growl, I have seen them live and they are all that and then some. if you really want to check out her harsh vocals go to who is gonna be the one or pit of conciousness, both live stage versions and both outstanding.

A good analysis, I recommend a few live performances to get a better idea of Tatiana's range:
"Judgement (and Punishment)" Tatiana's one-take vocal version,
"Pit of Consciousness" and "One the Top" both live in Kiev",
"Perennial" live at Wacken open air festival 2019,
"Who is Going to Be the One" live.
Recently Tatiana also made a live appearance with 'Spiritbox' performing their song "Circle with Me" at 'Louder Than Life" 2024.
All of these give you a good overview of Tatiana's abilities.
Tatiana is well known for being able to switch between clean singing and growling with little or no pause. Anyway, I hope that this will help.

Their performance of "Perennial" live at Wacken is fantastic, showcasing her breath control and proficiency, especially as it is the last song of the set. The quick shifts between clean and growl vocals are impressive, and although you can hear how exhausted she is when speaking to the crowd at the end, it never shows in her singing.

OMG Tim! I was waiting for this to crop up on your feed. As usual you are spot on about so many of your analyses. For sure there is is a lot of post-processing in this video, despite its claims to be a live video. However, you are very wrong to think that she is pedal-stepping or processing her growls. There are so many Jinjer videos where you can observe her, hear her doing it for real with just a bit of reverb and delay. Have a look at Audiotree - 'From Nothing (Vortex)' or her live one-take vocal playthrough of 'Judgement and Punishment' or characteristically, 'Perennial' live at Wacken which is the usual suggestion after this one, and you'll see, there is nothing about her growls that are 'effected' (although they have reverb and delay on them).
I've seen them live and it is all legit, real-time honest talent. Astonishing talent.

You can also check out her live performance of Circle with me. with the band Spirit Box 2024. She delivers some very deep power growls

She actually does these deep growls but there are scream/growl layering in this track (post-processes). But you’ll see her monster growls in live (true live) videos

Your "mistake" was to assume that everything you heard was recorded in this live session. What happened was that they had the idea to record a new version of the song to showcase Vlad, the new (at the time) drummer, who put such a different spin on the original (which was recorded by the previous drummer) that it gave the song what it needed to "shine". However, they had very little spare time between concerts so they decided to go to the studio, do a live session and film it for a video. They recorded everything but for the final mix they only used the drums and the guitar parts played by Roman in this session; the bass track, the vocal tracks (with some parts left out) and the guitar parts that Roman didn't play here (also with some parts left out) were all taken from the original studio recording. You might say "oh, so they cheated!" but let me emphasize again that this new version was made to *showcase the new drummer only* but since the rest of the song had to sound as close as possible to the original, they didn't care much about using previously recorded tracks.
The "problem" was that when reaction channels discovered this video the spotlight shifted to Tatiana's vocals and it blew up because of that.

That's all her. Keep in mind part of that technique is the proximity effect from the mic she's using. Not a phone with a cheap mic being held seven feet away. No pedal involved. That is why growlers cup the mic or use mics like the RE20 or SM7 used in broadcast for their low end response. The frequencies are there but they aren't as prominent as the rest (like the grit coming from the false chords vs whatever resonances are being created in the nasal cavity). I think it's Belies because the scale armor belies what is actually underneath the armor which is virgin innocence. Hard on the outside, soft and vulnerable on the inside.

Two good live songs to look at are Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air 2019 and Pit of Consciousness Live in Kyiv. I think you would be surprised how much depth she gets. The problem with the examples you found was that she has such a wide pallet of harsh vocals that some songs don't have the lows. she can go high, go low, go for the middle range. You caught the middle range in those cell phone clips. Another good video for them is Judgement and Punishment One Take Vocal. In that one she is using an AKG P420 condenser mic, at a distance. Same techniques but little proximity effect. Even less lows than in the smaller room she is in in the cell phone clips. She goes to the same depth in Who is Gonna Be The One Live and in Outlander Official Live at Loudfest. Also briefly in Sit Stay Roll Over Live in Melbourne.

In fact in the Pit of Consciousness Live video she goes deeper than she does here at one point but you will notice that she's practically eating the mic and cupping it completely. It sounds slightly different because the most expensive part of that wireless mic she uses is the wireless transmitter not the mic capsule (unlike an RE20). The harsh vocals always depend a lot male or female singer on the type of mic and how it's used.

The meaning of the song is that she is a Pisces and she is talking about the duality of her nature. Hard on the outside but soft on the inside. Pisces are said to be mediators between dark and light hence the symbol of Pisces which is two fish swimming in opposite directions. Hence the lyrics of the second verse. Tatiana is very much an introvert but bounces around the stage like a maniac and is well known for her stage presence. She shuts that off abruptly when she leaves the stage and then is very withdrawn, quiet and shy.

As a vocal coach. If you just want to see her, try Judgement & Punishment one take

She is 100% real, and can go that low naturally. You can't take one phone recording and accept that she can't go that low. Sometimes she's better than other times just like any vocalist.

The Charismatic Voice is setting up a research project that will be scoping the throats of metal singers and Tatiana has agreed to be one of them.

A lot of people recommend Perennial as the follow up to prove that she can really do this live, but another good video to see a raw performance without any extra production (which this video definitely has, even if she is singing too) is her one take of Judgement and Punishment.

Another vote for Judgement and Punishment! I saw them live a few weeks ago for the first time and she sounds just as incredible as on a recording!

Her growls r real. There is some doubling in vocals. But she can go deep

Welcome to Jinjer. The band is a collection of extremely talented musicians and Tatiana is a vocal goddess. I highly recommend reacting to their live performances. "Perennial" live at Wacken 2019 is a great next experience. I would also suggest her collaboration with Spiritbox live on "Circle with Me" as a must do reaction. good reaction (Subbed)
