"Useless" degrees are only worthless because no one teaches practical application of the skills and knowledge or gives direction towards jobs other than the "obvious". I have an associates in the fine arts degree from a community college. Jack of all trades artist, I just wanted to make a living doing art. High School and college only really seemed to push that you could be a gallery artist or a book illustrator.
I'm now 30 and have been working on tv shows and movies for a few years and have no college debt. I age and paint costumes and props. It's a job I had no idea existed, but all of the things I've tried and done and played with over the years artistically, in and out of school, have come into play.
If your kid loves making music, they don't need to play in an orchestra or rock band. They can research writing jingles for commercials, scores for movies, tracks for indie games and youtube bumpers. If your kid wants to be a writer, they can look at work in copy writing, SEO, and general content for things like websites. A kid who grew up wanting to work on their favorite video game probably did the 3D animation on a cleaning product commercial instead, and got paid better for it.

The work is out there for creatives, philosophers, and ethics majors. We're just really bad at recognizing it as related work.

I have a bachelor's degree in music education...presumably useless, BUT I am using it! I teach music at a residential treatment facility for adjudicated youth. Not what I initially set out to do (strings teacher), and yet, I love it!

Eight years out of high school, I'm a full-time book editor. I didn't need a degree, just a few online courses, so I'm really glad I didn't go to college for an English degree like my teachers were pushing for.

I was a jazz performance major for a year and a half before switching to biology and minoring in jazz. That shit is HARD bro. It was so fucking stressful and honestly bio is so much easier than jazz 😂

majored in graphic design, or an art degree in 2019, and am working in grafic design since 2019, so far so good, I was the only kid in my family whit bad grades and the one who went to art HS, but now I make the most money, it's always about how far you can push yourself and take all the opportunities no matter if you are ready for them or not.

English and Linguistics grad here. was headed for a university carrier until I "found out" that this is more like an at least 20 years treadmill of doing all the unwanted work of the professors with them getting all the credits, for a salary the cleaning lady laughs about.
went back to University, took another degree in SL therapy - now I earn a good living, am part time self employed, part time employed and enjoy every day of work.

The local army depot has lots of open 6 figure jobs asking for a masters or more in psychology... idk how thats a useless degree at that point.

Now that I think of it, only a few of my friends and family are working in a field in which they majored. Next time we have a reunion, we should debate who strayed most randomly.

Wanted to share my experience because psych majors often get discouraged: I got my BA in Community Psychology and started working in nonprofits. I did an accelerated masters program and will finish in the spring. I plan on using this degree in research as others from my program have found jobs working in universities. Eventually I do plan on getting a PhD but instead of tripling down on psych I want to go into political science and public policy. Like they mention; make it work for you. I got a job at a sexual assault crisis center while still in undergrad and have experience implementing programs for other nonprofits as well 🤷🏾‍♀️

I thought this would make me feel better about getting a degree that's proving very difficult to get a job in. Nah. Somehow I feel worse. My degree field isn't event Political Science or Liberal Arts. There's a demand but they won't give you an entry level job without 5 years experience. Like God, can I just have a chance!? Rant over.
