Aerial footage has shown fountains of lava bursting from the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii after it erupted for the first time in 40 years.

It’s the largest active volcano in the world and its eruption was large enough that it could be seen from space.

Experts have said it could take weeks for the lava to reach residents.

"We knew it was coming, we just didn't know that it was going to be in the middle of the night, after thanksgiving weekend".... these volcanos are so disrespectful these days and irresponsible. No warnings at all, it's unbelievable.

I've never understood why humans continue to live in the vicinity of active volcanoes or over known fault lines like the San Andreas fault, especially after the 1906 earthquake.
