The 2025 Volkswagen Taos has arrived, bringing with it a host of upgrades that promise to elevate the compact SUV's appeal in an increasingly competitive segment. With a bold new look, enhanced technology, and a more powerful engine, the refreshed Taos aims to build on the success of its predecessor while addressing some of its shortcomings.

At first glance, the most noticeable changes are to the Taos' exterior. Volkswagen has given the front end a significant makeover, with a redesigned bumper and a new grille that features an available light bar. This modern touch adds a premium feel to the compact SUV's fascia, bringing it in line with current automotive design trends. The standard LED projector headlights across all trims not only improve visibility but also contribute to a more upscale appearance.

Moving to the rear, connected taillights and an illuminated Volkswagen badge further enhance the Taos' visual appeal. These subtle yet effective changes give the SUV a more cohesive and contemporary look. The addition of three new paint colors - Bright Moss Green, Monterey Blue Pearl, and Monument Gray - provides buyers with more options to express their personal style.

The wheels have also received attention, with new designs available across the range. Front-wheel-drive S models now sport 17-inch aluminum alloys, while the front-wheel-drive SE gets 18-inch wheels. For those seeking a more aggressive stance, 19-inch wheels are available on the SEL trim. The SE Black trim, introduced in the previous model year, continues to offer a distinctive appearance with its black roof, trim, and unique wheel options.

Inside the cabin, Volkswagen has made significant strides in modernizing the Taos' interior. The new dashboard design is a welcome update, featuring a standard 8-inch floating infotainment display across all models. This change alone brings a more contemporary feel to the cabin and improves the user interface experience. Higher trims benefit from touch controls for the Climatronic HVAC system, adding a premium touch to the interior.

Volkswagen has also paid attention to the materials and colors used in the cabin. The base S trim features a two-tone black and grey cloth upholstery, while SE and SE Black models get a mix of CloudTex and cloth materials. The range-topping SEL trim offers leather seats in either a two-tone black and grey combination or a striking new dark blue hue, further elevating the interior ambiance.
One of the most significant upgrades comes in the form of improved acoustics. New dampening treatments have been implemented to reduce interior noise, addressing a common complaint about the previous model. This enhancement should make for a more refined and comfortable driving experience, especially during highway cruising.

Under the hood, the 2025 Taos receives a welcome boost in power. The updated 1.5-liter EA211 turbocharged four-cylinder TSI engine now produces 174 horsepower, up from 158 hp in the outgoing model. This increase comes courtesy of several hardware changes, including revised piston rings and fuel injectors, a modified turbo housing, a larger intercooler, and a new gasoline particulate filter. While not a massive jump in output, the additional horses should provide more spirited acceleration and improved passing power.

Notably, Volkswagen has made a significant change to the transmission lineup for 4Motion all-wheel-drive models. The previous seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic has been replaced with a conventional eight-speed automatic transmission. This change aims to enhance drivability, potentially offering smoother shifts and better low-speed maneuverability - areas where some dual-clutch transmissions can feel less refined.

On the technology front, the 2025 Taos comes standard with Volkswagen's IQ.DRIVE suite of driver assistance features across all trims. This comprehensive package includes Travel Assist for semi-automated driving, Front Assist with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control with stop-and-go functionality, Lane Assist, and Emergency Assist. The addition of available front and rear Park Distance Control further enhances the Taos' practicality in urban environments.
