Also, if you don't have a shelf, find a hammer quickly. Spam barricades and stand in the middle so Big Gef (or as I like to call it Mutant Gef) will be blocked off. Make sure to get the sides too.

I just build a bunker by building on the two planks and two shelves of those rectangular houses

On the day 1, find a house and barricade all the windows, DONT BARRICADE THE EXIT.
Day 2, Cover up the roof of the house as many planks as you can, this will prevent the big gef from getting and destroying your house.
Day 3, finish covering walls up and pretty much done.
