A Bit Of A Mess - Soundcore Motion Boom Plus

An unboxing, overview and audio test of the Soundcore Motion Boom Plus. I was really looking forward to the release of this speaker following the wonderful Motion Boom but this has a major problem!

If you don't feel like watching the video, the Motion Boom Plus is a great speaker in so many ways. The size makes it pack a massive punch power wise. It has excellent battery life and all the features you'd expect from a modern Bluetooth speaker.

The only problem is that it just sounds a bit rough. It's hard to place exactly because the moment people talk about audio, strange adjectives get thrown around in attempt to linguistically capture something that is felt but can really be verbally expressed.

So I'll go with harsh, over-bright and splashy. In many cases, almost to the point of annoyance. It's called a Motion Boom Plus but, sonically it's actually a Motion Boom minus because it does not sound as good as the little brother.

Thanks for watching and please give it a thumbs up or subscribe to the TDCatTech channel for more reviews and critiques.

This video was reviewing the release version of the Motion Boom Plus. Anker released a number of firmware updates shortly after user feedback and it's now a good value speaker with much improved sound.

This video needs to be updated because the Soundcore Motion Boom plus is a phenomenal speaker. It sounds great, no problems whatsoever.

Having had the Boom Plus for just under a week now, I took it with me to friends and family houses as well as to work, generally those who heard it appeared to be blown away by its detail but also its presence, many could not believe that such a small package could produce such sound.

Firmware 00.36 is out now. I've updated and the audio is definitely better than the original out of box experience. I also use the Dolby Atmos Music option on my Galaxy S10e and find it helps the audio even more than playing with the speaker EQ settings.

Yeah, totally agreed with you that soundcore messed up the treble and the mids too for the speaker out of the box, but then again we have the EQ for now and I hope Soundcore could fix this with a firmwear update soon

If I'm correct, Soundcore lists the tweeters as being titanium drivers. Therefore, the higher frequencies are likely to be harsh until after some hours of use.

I bought mine yesterday, and noticed, the soundcore signature default eq is different than what you show at the time of this video, so maybe they're listening. I was blown away by it, but yeah, noticed something a bit too shrill about the sound. I thought it was the bass which is omnipresent on this device. If you're into bass, this unit is amazing, but it also turns down nicely as well, but after your video, I agree, the trebles were too high. I used your eq, and it sounds awesome now.

Totally agreed, You're one of the few who mentions the harsh treble. It's hard to use it as a indoor speaker for relax music listening. Even if you decrease the treble in the app, it's not a clean sound. I guess, the most people are focussed on the loudness and the deep bass. The JBL Extreme 3 is not loud and bassy as the Motion Plus, but better balanced and more musical. The Motion Boom Plus is excellent for partys and outdoor performance. I also was unhappy with the Motion Boom. Mids and Highs weren't clean. I think, this the Anker Soundsignature.

Thanks for the review. I have a 1970's Pioneer 990 receiver. I can guarantee that 1.0W CONTINUOUS is amazingly loud over floor speakers, but that's from a time when a watt was more of an "honest" watt... Modern wattage numbers seem to be smoke and mirrors, but one is dealing with solid state IC amps, not massive copper windings.

Please give your Motion Boom Plus another go and do an update. Since your review, Soundcore has issued firmware updates that have resolved the harsh highs. And they have fixed the passive radiator problem too. This is now my favorite big speaker. I like it even more than my Tribit Stormbox Blast, which has a slightly bigger sound but lacks detail.

Harsh treble comes up again in comments and Amazon reviews. Also, comments say that the Motion Boom is warmer sounding and less harsh. Do you know if that's true?

From the various Original Motion Boom reviews and comparisons out there to date- especially factoring in price, overall sound quality, Portability...etc- the Motion Boom still shines through (there seems to be some magic in those full range drivers).

Soundcore should capitalize on this with a Motion Boom 2 rendition, with slight upgrades (Aux in, Flash support, battery, BT version, hardware...etc) but retaining the general price range (<$100) and make a well deserved kill.

I've got the new Boom + and it's absolutely amazing for every genre of music. I listen to trance too and it's just impeccable. What made it an absolute zero brainer was the £127 introductory price.

I have the Anker Soundcore 3, the MotionBoom, and the Soundcore Rave+ and I am realy disappointed that I cannot link any of them together!! Three different speakers, all for their own purpose...quiet a shame really.

Had choice between the Motion Boom Plus or a second Motion Boom…. And I’m happy I went with a second Motion Boom instead. The TWS feature is beautiful. I bet the Plus is great, but for the price difference… the original Boom really holds its own.

A good honest review of the product! Thanks

It's really good to remember that with age we can no longer hear above 15khz anyway. So it doesn't matter even if the device doesn't reproduce that area at all😁

Separate tweeters can improve the sound, but they can also ruin the whole in a bad case. As I understand it, the smaller model does not have separate tweeters

I get mine in a few days. Will compare it to my 2 Motion Booms and W-King W-10. My Motion Booms also have annoyingly harsh trebles. That's why I ordered this, hoping to be a more mellow and relaxed sound, all the while having a bigger soundstage. Apparently one step forward but one giant leap back!😆

As a musician I would love to hear your opinion on using this as a keyboard practice speaker. That's my intention, I currently use an IK multimedia iLoud speaker and find it lacks warmth and bass when used at high volumes. Also would like to know if there's any latency when using the aux in and if the EQ also works with the line input. Great review by the way.

I've been into audio for 30+ years having work in the professional and home arena's. What Boom Plus offers for the price asked is truly remarkable IMHO.
