There's a reason why he always looks so horrified by the idea of the "last day" of a planet. It's because he's seen the last day of one already. Not only that, but he caused it himself.

The Dr after this one said it best. After all that time, he could still hear the screams as Daleks and Time Lords burned together...

Not during combat prep. Meaning there is an acceptable noogie time.

I think there are several possibilities Strax didn't account for mainly relating to the use of a detached force.
An attacking army could telegraph a defensive formation etc, whilst sending in a smaller (often elite) force to surprise the enemy.
As the opponent engages the detached force the main force moves in, attempting to surround the enemy position.

When they brought the Sontarans back in the 21st century Dr Who, they decided to shrink them. Sontarans from the original Dr Who of the 1970s & 1980s were anything from 5& half feet to just over 6 feet in height, depending on how tall the actor was playing the Sontaran, I don't know if Sontarans were in the 1960s Dr Who, I only started watching from the first colour episodes when Jon Pertwee, was the Doctor, when I was a kid.
