I paid 200.00 to hear this aria at Met 10/2018. Didn't care for the opera at all so it was a chore sitting thru it for a 2 minute aria but he was worth it. If it had been Boheme/Butterfly/Tosca I probably would have jumped on stage...he's definitely worth the jail time ❤️

The problem is the 440 A. It should be 432. Verdi, for example, never wrote for 440. He said the ideal intonation for his Operas is with an A at 432. That's about half a step lower. I don't know about Puccini though, what was his preferred pitch.

The same potential vein-poppin' problem afflicts Nina Stemme. Enormous tension in her too reaching for top notes which often come out flat anyway. Frightening to watch her eyes nearly bulge out of their sockets and her face, like Kaufmann's, turn beet red in the process. This is no way to sing. Feels and sounds unhealthy.
