National Education Union (NEU) members describe the impact of the cost of living crisis.

Only a fully-funded above-inflation pay rise can stop teachers and support staff being driven out of the profession.

teachers in London are on 45-55k per year plus all the extras, uplifts and time off for 2nd jobs in summer, Christmas etc. I feel sorry for the support staff cleaners, caretakers, teaching assistants, admin staff.

There should not be a cost of living crisis in this country when there are footballers being paid 50k+per week to kick a bit of leather around a piece of grass. There is something fundamentally wrong with our country when 5% of the population commands 90% of the wealth, we need an instant levelling up in this country otherwise anarchy will eventually prevail

And yet we can afford 7 million pounds a day to keep immigrants in warm hotels with hot food

Why are teachers using food banks ? I would suggest that like the rest of society they are subject to living beyond their means, while credit was easy to get and they could afford repaymanets on credit cards. Now thw crunch comes, so have debts, they need to service on top of living. Plenty of people have two jobs, and they don't get the holidays teachers do. Teachers forget that it is not just the salary that they cost suppose you are a classroom teacher, on average £40, 000 including allowances, on top employers pay 14.5% NI and 25% saved for teachers pensions, so that's an extra £16, 000 they cost, the majority of which is saved for their future, which is why they can afford to retire at 55. I will conceed that teaching is more difficult now with children coming into the classroom, still wearing nappies at four, and as they get older the behaviour problems increase. The teacher with the three children, said it all she would be better off on benefits, and I in 5 working people claim benefits. Like many no doubt, Dad has gone and so has his salary, and even if the authorities catch up with him, he pays a measly amount and goes on to found another family, and leaves the rest of us to pay for his first.
