“Never solder again! But first… solder!”

This is cool, I wish I had known about this mod a month ago before soldering fresh tabbed batteries in my gold, silver and Crystal cartridges I recently bought (nostalgia is a powerful thing)
I'll try remember this mod in the next 5 years when they need replacing again

I hope the batteries stay in there pretty tight without being dislodged by undue shock from being dropped for instance!

No reason to add solder first when you have that tip and flux.

For a traditional iron without cartridges you may want to increase the temperature since there is a lot of thermal mass in these parts but you also have a lot of mass in your K-tip (knife) to help… and even more if you pre-load with solder.

You just align and flux in place then bring your tinned tip in. You can preload the tip with enough solder but any amount will still tack it in place. You can always add more solder after it is semi-secured on both ends and the flux inside should be enough. Just dwell the iron for a second after it’s molten then add fresh solder so the thermal load doesn’t overwhelm the iron during that moment when the flux core is activating.

Loading the iron first means the tip and solder will already be at temp and all of the iron’s recovery will go into heating the contacts instead… aided by the heat mass and molten solder heat bridge.

This advice applies to both the flex PCB and the metal retainer piece. It’s literally less than half the work for potentially better results!

at like 5 bucks a piece, and you have to solder 4 times instead of just 2... I will stick to buying Panasonic tabbed batts from Digi key for just over a buck a piece. IF the small pcb was cheaper, I'd look into it. Not worth 4.80$ for a battery that takes well over 15 years to die. Still, very cool. I wish these were cheaper!

I'd love something like this but for a GBA cart

I'd solder everything BEFORE soldering it complete to the gameboard.

Not complete without seeing battery go in and play start up on GB...

Does this also work on a Pokemon Yellow (USA)? It looks like the flex pcb has the soldering points for not only the retainer but the battery pads on a pokemon yellow pcb.

Nice. 👍 That Digi-Key thing is crazy... Did you email support about it? I've been a Digi-Key customer for like 15 years and have never had something like that happen. 🤔

90% of my crarts don't have contact pads in those locations... they're parallel rather than diagonal. Did this work on all your carts?

I don’t see the benefit, these battery holders are expensive and you won’t be changing these batteries a lot, a soldered battery will last for years before they ran out

I’ve never seen the appeal of adding battery holders. Soldered batteries last at least a decade, and dropping the cartridge is far less likely to knock them loose.

yeah you have to solder a battery retainer...for what? That the battery lasts 20 years again...
