People in and around the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv are suffering from power cuts caused by Russian missile and drone strikes, executed by Moscow in recent months. Electricity and heating are a missing comfort during sub-zero temperatures. At nightfall, Ukraine's capital is plunged in absolute darkness. I don't understand why it is difficult for Ukrainian leaders to declare that they will not join NATO.

I have family in Ukraine. My brother-in-law is pro-Western and was very active during the 2014 maidan. Back then, I asked him whether he realized that the overthrow of the democratically elected pro-Russian Yanukovich government would ultimately lead to a war with Russia and the destruction of Ukraine's statehood. He didn't believe me. He acknowledged there would be economic pressure from Russia, but no more than that. Russia wouldn't dare go against the US power.
