New executive order moves US 'close as we can' to universal background checks for gun sales: Biden

U.S. President Joe Biden announced and signed a new executive order on gun violence on Tuesday that he said would continue and accelerate work already being done.
The order is intended to keep firearms out of dangerous hands by directing Attorney General Merrick Garland to take "every lawful action possible to move us as close as we can" to universal background checks without the need for new legislation.
He said the order also expands public awareness campaigns about red flag laws.
Biden added the order will also work to hold the gun industry "accountable" by calling for an "independent government study" analyzing how gun manufacturers "aggressively market firearms to civilians, especially minors, including by using military imagery."
The order also seeks to promote more secure firearms storage and ensure U.S. law enforcement agencies get the most from last summer's bipartisan gun control law.
The Democratic president unveiled his latest efforts at curbing gun violence during a speech in Monterey Park, Calif., where a gunman stormed a dance hall and shot 20 people, killing 11, following a Lunar New Year celebration. The bipartisan legislation passed after the killings of 10 grocery store shoppers in Buffalo, N.Y., and 19 students and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas.
