oh, my. we are in for a treat. Birdland is a song about Charlie Parker's place. he was an epic sax player and his nickname was Bird, so the club was called Birdland. his music transcends generations. just like Manhattan Transfer does.

The Manhattan Transfer is a Grammy award winning vocal group founded in 1969 that has done many genres of music including a cappella, vocalese, swing, standards, Brazilian jazz, R&B & pop music. They did a great cover of "The Boy From New York City" in 1981. Other songs are "Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)", "Route 66", "Java Jive", "Tuxedo Junction", "Operator" etc.

My favorite song of theirs is “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square.”

Trist Curless replaced Tim Hauser in Manhattan Transfer after he died in 2014. Trist had been the bass for the acapella group m-pact, and at that time had been brought in to conduct a workshop for the students at a California high school where a certain Avi Kaplan was the star bass singer. The choir director had Trist do a one-on-one session with Avi on things he needed to know as a bass singer, stuff like how to use a microphone effectively. Trist was later the sound engineer on Pentatonix’s 2014 tour.

This group is touring after 50 years!!!! 2023 will be their final year touring. check out their album from about three years ago or so. It is called The Junction and is a fantastic album with great covers and original material from swing to funk. Check out Swing Balboa on the riverside on youtube. How many groups have been together for 50 years. Amazing longevity. Sadly Tim Hauser the founder died a few years back but they just got back on their bike and kept on peddling. They are considered by many to be the ultimate at vocalese - singing vocals to instrumental parts from songs especially from the Big Band era.

If you wish to hear something bordering on heavenly check out their cover of God Only Knows with the WDR orchestra. Simply stunning.

Jazz giants Weather Report wrote the original instrumental and had their closest to a commercial hit with it. This collection of vocal acrobats put lyrics to it and this vocalese wonder is the result.

I keep waiting for the hoist to come out and help that guy out of the split 😂

First, it’s a Vocalese on the Weather Report song “Birdland, ” with lyrics by Jon Hendricks. It’s an homage to one of the most famous jazz clubs of all time, named for Charlie Parker, who was nicknamed Bird or Yardbird. That’s kind of common knowledge.

Can you imagine Manhattan Transfer and Pentatonix singing together in a collab?
Oh, wait. That already happened.

Hope that this isn't your first time listener of Manhattan Transfer, if so welcome aboard. This is a jazz favorite made famous by Weather Report, Maynard Ferguson, Quincy Jones 👍🏾🎶🎶👊🏾 'Birdland is a jazz club in NYC named in honor of Charlie Parker.

I have heard of The Manhattan Transfer and "Birdland", but this song didn't sound familiar. Maybe something else of theirs will.
