Call Northside 777 is a 1948 reality-based newspaper drama directed by Henry Hathaway.

The film parallels the true story of a Chicago reporter who proved that a man jailed for murder was wrongly convicted 11 years before.

James Stewart stars as the persistent journalist and Richard Conte plays the imprisoned Frank Wiecek. Wiecek is based on Joseph Majczek, who was wrongly convicted of the murder of a Chicago policeman in 1932, one of the worst years of organized crime during Prohibition.

Brilliant! I admire most how the innocent man said, "It's a good world out there." And how the mother never gave up and knew she was never alone so long as she had her faith and the truth. I feel that my own situation is similar is some ways. I believe that I cannot fail as lone as I retain my love for the truth and do not allow myself to be corrupted by bitterness. Frank was dignified and never bitter.

Thanks so much for uploading this gem from 1948. I hadn't seen it before and was so impressed. This is an Oscar-calibre film in many respects. Based on a true story, which always helps. Outstanding James Stewart, Richard Conte and Lee J Cobb with superb supporting cast, especially Frank's wonderful mother who never gives up on him and the seedy Wanda who takes forever to track down. And we get the interesting element of the newly invented lie detector test, and the way they are able to blow up the photo of the newspaper boy. The scene at the end where Frank sees his son, mother, ex-wife and her 2nd husband is incredibly moving. Also loved James Stewart's foray into the seedier areas of Chicago as he tries to track down the elusive Wanda and of course there are the clothes, cars and street scenes to enjoy too. Brilliant film which I will watch again.

JOSEPH MAJCZEK was the real name of the man falsely accused of killing a cop ... and this film is based on his true story ... (Wiki) together with his friend (think it's MARCINKIEWICZ??) . This is a brilliant film, and of course brilliant acting from my all time fave actor James Stewart 💯💯💯

Wow...the movie did not need any Marvel characters, special effects, explosions, ultra violence, or excessive numbers of plot twists that do not fit. It managed to become a classic with an intelligent script, great acting, wit, a deeply human story, and style and grace. I really wish movies now would take some tips from how this film was made.
