Welcome to the eCave. In this episode I discuss the rarely seen IBM PC JX, which was launched back in November 1984 in Japan. It later found it's way to Australia/NZ. I talk about the history that lead up to the creation of this IBM PC in Japan and give you a lot of details on the technical specs. Towards the end I give you a tour of the IBM PC JX.

I commend you for shedding light on this very uncommon offshoot of the PCjr. I've always wondered about the JX's hardware specs, and I had no idea there was an up-clocked version (JX5). Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video and spell everything out.

Great work!
Just a few things to add. IBM released a version of the ProPrinter 4201 dot matrix impact printer for the JX in matching slate grey.
They also released an expansion unit that held a 10MB fixed disk drive / hard drive.
It was possible to read 720 KB 3.5" diskettes with JX DOS 3.2. If you used a suffix to to the format command you could also format them to 720KB.
You may have noticed the small white plug on the printer port. The IBM JX parallel cable had no pin at that position so unless one removed the plug one was forced to use only the IBM cable.
Hardware hacks were undertaken by some users to add a second 384K RAM card to take total memory to 768KB, although not all of it could be addressed. Another one was to allow a second expansion unit to be added to allow both a 5.25 drive and a hard drive. There were some models of third party hard drives that were compatible with the JX's MFM fixed disk controller but JX DOS 3.2 imposed an upper limit on the size of a partition of I think 20MB. Users also created adapters to allow third party joysticks to be attached, converting DB plugs to fit the 'PS/2' DIN socket.
