Worst Rated Hotel - Scarisbrick Hotel, Southport

I stay in the Scarisbrick Hotel, Southport owned by Britannia Hotels and it's the Tenth consecutive year that Britannia has come bottom of the pile in the annual survey by consumer group Which?
It's received some very bad reviews on Tripadvisor and some bad press over the last 12 months, BUT is it as bad as some people say? Let's find out!

I'm from Southport and for years the Scarisbrick was regarded as one of the best in town. It was family owned and they took great pride in the place. I got married there in 2010 and everything was fantastic. We couldn't fault a thing. (By the way, the Churchtown Suite was the bridal suite 😁). Sadly the owner, Tony Cafferkey, had passed away the previous year and his family just wanted shot of the place. All was well until around 2011 when they sold it to Britannia Hotels. Unfortunately, the Scarisbrick (pronounced Scares-brick) underwent a huge decline, as do most hotels owned by Britannia. It's now a shadow of its former self and poor Mr Cafferkey must be turning in his grave.

This room is small but has everything you need. Like:
- Cobwebs
- Light fittings without lights
- A door that's clearly been opened with a crowbar
- Electrical hazards
- Bath with built in bum scratcher
- Fresh air whether you want it or not
Sounds like a solid deal to me

It's strange how all hotels seem to put chairs in such aimless places where no one would ever want to sit.

Speaking as a maintenance manager who works in a hotel, I don't know how these rooms get sold with these issues.

I'm stunned because I was in that hotel in the 90's and the celebrities used to stay there. It was an amazing hotel furnished to a very high standard and it was spotlessly clean. They had 24 hour roomservice and a fantastic full English breakfast with black pudding, hashbrowns, fried bread, tomatoes, beans, fried egg, bacon and sausages and there was no room on the plate. The woman who owned it must've retired and sold up because this is definitely not like it was 25 years ago. The car park was at the back of the hotel and it was underground and there was large gates at the back of the car park. Put it this way the radio 1 roadshow was on and all of the acts stayed at the Scarisbrick. Intact it was so good I always said if I stayed in Southport I'd stay at the Scarisbrick. I'm very disappointed.

This one makes me so sad. We spent my mums last holiday here when she was dying of cancer in 1995. It was such a beautiful hotel. I am so sorry its been let into disrepair.

That window is definitely a massive safety issue. The fact a kid could stand on the bed and push the window open and fall.

As a former electrician, you are more than safe with that cable, it's an earth cable that's grounding the metal

As a kid, whenever me & family went on holiday, the first thing I wanted tot do was explore the hotel. Watching your videos, Tim, is like being back in those days.

I noticed that the curtains in your room were actually covering the headboard, makes me wonder if there was a different bed in there before because that's just weird. I was nervous that the window handle was going to fall off when you pushed the window open, couldn't believe how loose it was. You were brave to get into that lift, I wouldn't have trusted it to let me out again!

All these Victorian & Georgian hotels show the previous grandeur but the big issue I see is the cost of upkeep, which has become too much for the owners/operators. The same issue happens to stately homes which then fall into disrepair. These hotels are so interesting. For me a clean bed is the most important thing. Always interesting videos though.

My daughter worked on room service at a hotel during here student days, she told me that every horizontal surface in every room has had a used condom on it sometime or other. I have a ritual of cleaning all touchable surfaces with antiseptic wipes in any room I stay. That wire on the towel rail was perfectly safe, it's an earth bond, complies with the regulations.

It was much grander than this 30 plus years ago when I stayed. They used to park your car for you, the staff wore the correct attire, unlike the guy on reception and the tables had table cloths on. Our room was really lovely. You can tell its gone down hill. Shame!

Loved the part with the bloke singing to a full room and not a single person under sixty. Real Phoenix Nights vibe. Feels like a working men's club with a hotel attached.

The ‘Brick’ used to be a fantastic hotel which has sadly been absolutely neglected by its owners - Britannia Hotels.
Sadly they have also been allowed to purchase two other historic hotels in Southport - which have also been neglected.
It’s hard for old seaside towns to get tourists now, with shops struggling etc, but this is not helped by incompetent ownership - Britannia hotels, ruining hotels all over the country.

When you see the Britannia Hotels logo you know you’re in for a rough time. Chains like Premier Inn and even Wetherspoons have been really good at modernising these grand hotels while keeping that retro opulence that gives them their character. Britannia just don’t care.
