I think the fed should get out of student loans entirely. If the schools gave out the loans themselves the prices would come down. And I can name off many ways to not have student loan debt at all or very minimal.
1. GI bill. Serve your country then go to college. 2 of our sons did this.
2. Athletic scholarship, my youngest son did this, zero debt: this also applies to academic scholarships.
3. PSEO classes, take your freshman and sophomore year while in HS, start college as a JR, live at home and work part time, my daughter did this, zero debt
4. Agree to work in a underserved area after graduation, 2 of my sons youngest friends who are doctors did this, both spent 5 years on an native reservation, one stayed permanently, no debt.
6. Wait to go till you are 25 and then the loans are on your income, not your parents, work from 16-25, live at home, and pay cash for college.
7. Get into the trades and don't go at all. My nephews did this and both make over 160k a year.
8. Say no to pricey, private out of state schools, live at home and work through your local state school. Minimal to no debt.

My friend is an engineering processor in a 2nd tier state university making $70K a year. He told me their school president has salary >$1M and most administration staff have higher salary than professors. Student tuition are more than $40K a year. The US higher education is corrupted.

When you're young: Study, student loan!
When we have job: Buy a house! buy a car!
When we paid the house and the car: Here is your properties tax (the unrealized capital gain tax)!!!

Student loan forgiveness moves the burden of the debt from the borrowers to the taxpayer. The fact that the gov issues loans is WHY higher ed is so expensive. Forgiveness isn’t the answer, stopping giving loans is.

When we were looking into college for our son we discovered that the highest cost for universities is maintenance of facilities and grounds. We were told that most students/families make their college choice based on the attractiveness of the grounds. We all thought that that was a ridiculous reason to go into debt. So our son opted for online college at a fraction of the cost, worked to contribute, took a couple of gap years and just graduated debt free from Liberty University online.

I went to a junior college, paid $13 per unit + books. Paid for it myself.
My next two years were afforded via reimbursement from my company with a passing grade. So I carried a 1-course debt on my credit card for next two years. Upon graduation, I was able to pay the balance. No debt, no loans other than credit card.
Today I'm happy as a clam with a grain of sand.

I think what should happen is there should be a law passed on usury. There should be a cap on lending. So if the current interest rate is 6%, no lender can charge more than 11% . So they can only charge 5% over the current rate. This way it’s not exorbitant yet people still have to be accountable for their financial decisions .

As a retired FF Paramedic MOST FF Paramedics work a second and 3rd job because the civil service pay is so low.

I started as a Cisco systems internet engineer in the late 80s early ninety's. Guess what, the technology was new, and was learned on the job, there was no formal education for it. These corporations need to get back to more on the job training. The jobs are so specialized, no school could possibly teach it anyway.

Data from 2018, states that public college cost has risen by 64% in 10 years. When did public college education become for profit?? Why?? Ridiculous!!

A helping hand; not a handout! Pay to play. If all these students knew they had to pay back 100% of their loan, they would reconsider their school and degree choice. This is the reason higher education is so expensive. The schools know the students have a blank check. I am ok with a government program to “work off” some school loan debt in the military, but it must be a reasonable amount.

These ppl were lied to being told once they graduate, they will earn enough to be able to pay it back! And college costs were not controlled- administration’s salaries ballooned as students came w/fresh money from loans. It was a racket that is now coming home to roost.

In any other loan, they loan you money only if you have “collateral” (they can take back the house, the car) Also, you would have to demonstrate you have steady income from a job, so you are clearly able to repay. College Loans are nothing like that! In college loans, your potential to repay is based only on *assumed* future earnings. It’s RATIONAL to think that if they are willing to make the loan, they are confident you will be able to repay- or else why would they give you the money? But it’s a SCAM & you were swindled.

Student debt absolutely should NOT be forgiven. It is not fair to those that sacrificed to pay off loans or those that pursued the trades. Agee that part of the problem is the excessive spending on administration and luxurious facilities.
