I wouldn't be so disappointed in the genre if at least one of them was something I'd be able to stick with. But being a semi-casual player with a distaste for DPS optimizing builds and rotations is a death sentence. ESPECIALLY if you want to play with other people and not just stick to solo content.

The problem is there is a group of players that want old school MMORPGs mechanics. Then there is a group that wants something fun and engaging.

mmorpg nowadays doesn't have much in the social economy, trading ability beetween players, politics aspecs. Only some have it which make it live.

MMO creators just saw Ashes of Creation and what is the desired scope of an MMO and how those MMOs that are being in developement lack required system and mechanics, Developers decided to scrap the idea of an MMO and switch to RPG because (most likely) all their developed systems actually belong RPG genre but not MMO

I don't think of FFXIV as an MMO. I think of it as what the Producer thinks it is: An RPG, with an MMO tacked on. This is one reason why I continue to play it.

Reason why old MMOs hold still is fact that teams that work on them have mostly decade+ experience and they know what they do. Making MMO genre is hard, expensive and time consuming process with rlly high risk to fail at start if it does not please players on launch. Look at New World, game had rlly bad launch and i doubt game will ever recover from it even tho, it got rlly good overtime.
Lovely video, you earned my sub!

Too many excuses are being made for these developers. The poor management decisions and lack of heart and soul in the game play has been exchanged for maximizing every chance to microtransaction the player base. And that's not good enough, let's start charging extra revenue for early access, on top of the initial cost of the game, expansions, cosmetics, basic functionality like gear slots and mounts. Seems like their innovation and creativity only stems from their means of making more and more revenue instead of improving the game for the player community. They've lost their way and are out of touch with the reason people play games, they are stuck in business class learning ways to milk peoples' wallets. The only way out is for the gamer community to start voting with their wallets until greed monster is tamed.

What does Pantheon Rise of the Fallen need to do to get you hooked? What is the dream mmo?

Been playing GW2 forever. It has everything I want in an MMO.

Greed is definitely playing a role in the genre's steady atrophy.

Companies all believe the can be the next best thing, but here's the thing, your game isn't just gonna compete with other MMOS and time sink type games, It has to compete with the nostalgia and familiarity gamers have with their 'old' MMO: It's amazingly hard to pry someone away from WoW if they still have that first character they made 5, 10, 20 years ago. AND they have to compete with market saturation. Basically, it's incredibly hard to rip an MMO player away from his or her game. You need to be leagues of magnitude 'better' to break that nostalgia and investment attachment.
To me, it's already obvious that the next great MMO won't be an RPG as we think of them today. It's gonna be something completely different that will take the world by storm and only be an MMO in concept (meaning it'll be something Millions play together). Basically any progression based RPG mmo, wither it be action-y like Blue Protocol or a tab target classic like WoW, will fail. Ashes of creation will fail (before the price gouging, it doesn't matter. I don't even believe it will release to be honest). All the announced MMOS right now will fail.
They are all still trying to do the same thing but just nominally better. That solution is suicide.

If you’re a company wanting to build an MMO all you need to do is hire devs then have them play wow, elder scrolls online and RuneScape. Then brainstorm on how to build a game that is better than all three. It’s not rocket science but none of the new mmo companies do it. AGS is a prime example. Research by playing then find out what mechanics players like the most. Then focus on epic graphics with a ton of content that incorporates all the research playing the games.

the real problem is, creating a game and maintaining it needs money so creators needs to insert monetization to maintain the game and gain, in return it becomes a p2w depending on which the devs will do some money, most people dont understand this so they cry a lot, devs try to make it lite by doing the gains from pay for convenience, then capping the expenses but still people cry so no point, creatging a game isnt free. maintaining it is hard as well, but most players wants a game that dont have any monetization and etc which is VERY IMPOSSIBLE and i say NONE EXISTENT.

Instead of canning it, they could have just removed all the f2p garbage and slapped a price tag on it, people would have bought it. Instead they will make nothing.

Its not the mmos its the ppl that love crying, it just takes one to spread the negativity and thats what they base off of without even playing the game.

I was looking forward to Blue Protocol and am sad it's not happening. Mmorpgs have always seemed intimidating but Blue Protocol looked like something I could get into if it ever got over its hurdles.. and now it's just not happening. :/

It's not even that, its because people see 'free to play' and immediately associate them with mobile games or games like Lost Ark where you would need to pay to keep progressing. It's bullshit, games like WOW/XIV and even GW2 is thriving. Same goes for other live services like Diablo and Destiny. Stop making F2P then P2W types of games.

the main problem is no one is pumping out good mmos anymore they try and fail, the one that gets it right will be rich.
I think big companies are waiting for more tech to come out that makes it easier to place more people in one place.

I don’t see a future for MMO’s. People have had enough with the generic open worlds and stupid fetch quests. There is too much generic filler content to try and populate these vast open worlds. Just look at Ubisofts play formula and their games aren’t even MMOs. There was a period where studios were able to get funding because they thought there was a chance of becoming the next WoW. Those days are over and since no one has been able to replicate WoW’s success it’s just too much of a risk to put that much money and time into a games development that most of the games that do release flop. The other issue is people burn through content at a much faster pace then developers can make it and these games don’t age well. The graphics become outdated within a couple of years and gaming trends change so it’s difficult to get subscribers in decent numbers after its release.

At this point we need a full dive MMO.
