The Beatles - Ob La Di Ob La Da - 2024 stereo remix

A new 2024 stereo mix, based on the mono version. The existing stereo versions have the vocals doubled up, created with artificial double tracking, which gives the mix a fake stereo sound (one that I have never liked). In the mono version, Paul's lead vocal is not doubled up, and it has a very dry sound. That is how I wanted the 50th anniversary 2018 stereo remix to sound. The original stereo mix of Birthday had the same kind of sound, but thankfully they got the remix of that one right. I think Birthday is the standout track on the 2018 remixed White Album.

Artificial double tracking (ADT) is an analogue recording technique designed to enhance the sound of voices or instruments during the mixing process. It uses tape delay to create a delayed copy of an audio signal which is then played back at slightly varying speed controlled by an oscillator and combined with the original. The effect is intended to simulate the sound of the natural doubling of voices or instruments achieved by double tracking. The technique was developed in 1966 by engineers at Abbey Road Studios at the request of the Beatles.

Desmond has a barrow in the marketplace
Molly is the singer in a band
Desmond says to Molly, "Girl, I like your face"
And Molly says this as she takes him by the hand

Ob-la-di, ob-la-da
Life goes on, brah
La, la, how the life goes on
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da
Life goes on, brah
La, la, how the life goes on

Desmond takes a trolley to the jeweler's store
Buys a 20-carat golden ring (ring)
Takes it back to Molly waiting at the door
And as he gives it to her, she begins to sing (sing)

Ob-la-di, ob-la-da
Life goes on, brah
La, la, how the life goes on
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da
Life goes on, brah
La, la, how the life goes on (yeah)

In a couple of years, they have built a home, sweet home
With a couple of kids running in the yard
Of Desmond and Molly Jones (ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha)
Happy ever after in the marketplace
Desmond lets the children lend a hand (arm, leg)
Molly stays at home and does her pretty face
And in the evening, she still sings it with the band (yes)

Ob-la-di, ob-la-da
Life goes on, brah
La, la, how the life goes on (hey)
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da
Life goes on, brah
La, la, how the life goes on

In a couple of years, they have built a home, sweet home
With a couple of kids running in the yard
Of Desmond and Molly Jones (hey)
Happy ever after in the marketplace
Molly lets the children lend a hand
Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face
And in the evening, she's a singer with the band (yeah)

Ob-la-di, ob-la-da
Life goes on, brah
La, la, how the life goes on (hey)
Ob-la-di, ob-la-da
Life goes on, brah
La, la, how the life goes on

And if you want some fun
Take ob-la-di-bla-da
Thank you

In this remix, Paul's vocals are placed in the center, and the background performance is turned into stereo. It's a great mix. However, I think double tracking is one of the Beatles' charms.👍👍👍

This sounds wonderful, Pat. It does work better with the "solo" lead vocal.

One of the best McCartney compositions! The voice in your remixed mono version sounds better now! But I had never realised that the hand clapping at the beginning was only audible in the stereo version.

🎧👍 Great remix, Pat and a good explanation of ADT; it helped to steady my OCD! It's neat how the already present bass quickly turns into deep bass with a perfect balance of everything from start to finish. I don't remember hearing that cute, 'thank you' at the end. I'm really enjoying these remixes of yours coming every other day and they give me something else to anticipate. Stay right here 'cause these are the good old days!
Fred from FredFlix gave me a compliment yesterday and asked me if I was from England because of my spelling.

I don't wish to bore you but since I am here...My dad helped my brother and me make tops when we were children and I think it must have been an English thing. He acquired some broken wooden baseball bats and sawed them off about 4 or 5 inches from the end you hang onto. Then he tapered the end and drove a tack or something metallic into the middle so it would not be spinning on the wood and wearing it down. Last thing was a stick with a strong string tied to it with a knot in the end to whip the top with. You could get it spinning at great speeds and guide it around quite easily as you continued to whip it. I saw exactly one of those in one of those famous pictures of the Titanic before her voyage. A child on deck had one just like what we had made.

Good stereo re-mix Pat . Funnily enough I prefer The Marmalades version to this Beatles original. Cheers

In 1976 Capitol Records issued Got To Get You Into My Life as a single. It went to number 4. Following in the pattern of releasing tracks that were not issued as 45’s originally, they released this, the original mix.

It went nowhere.
