How to Treat Vaginal Dryness in Women Peri-Menopausal and Post-Menopausal
Показать описание
Vaginal dryness in peri-menopausal and postmenopausal women
Vaginal dryness is thought to affect between half and three-quarters of people who are either perimenopausal (the stage leading up to menopause) or who have reached menopause. Unlike most menopause symptoms, it’s unlikely to go away on its own and tends to get worse with time.
What causes vaginal dryness?
As you reach menopause, your ovaries gradually stop making the hormone estrogen.
As your estrogen levels drop, the walls of your vagina become thinner, drier, and less flexible. They’re also more easily irritated. As part of this process, your body also produces fewer vaginal secretions, so your vagina is less well-lubricated. This can impact your physical health and your enjoyment of sex. It can even affect your mental health. There are vaginal treatments available for vaginal dryness
The symptoms of a dry vaginal include:
• soreness, for example when wearing jeans or sitting down
• burning and/or itching in and around the vagina
• inflammation, leading to redness and discharge
• going for a pee more often than usual
• urinary tract infections (UTIs), especially after sex
• pain, tearing, or bleeding during sex
You can also have vaginal dryness if you:
• are not aroused during sex
• use perfumed soaps, washes, or douches in and around your vagina
Vaginal Dryness can also be caused by other medical conditions eg diabetes, so it’s best to speak to your GP about what is happening.
Treatment of Vaginal Dryness
• Vaginal moisturizers- eg Replens
• Water based Vaginal lubricants eg ky jelly, applied at the time of sexual activity to alleviate pain during intercourse.
• A low-dose vaginal estrogen or hormonal cream, gel, tablet, or ring, to strengthen vaginal tissues. This will have to be prescribed by your doctor after a careful assessment of its suitability for you.
• Some form of a nightly vaginal suppository
• hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as a general treatment for menopausal symptoms eg Gina
• Regular sexual activity or vaginal stimulation also helps maintain healthy vaginal tissues in women after menopause.
Avoid these in vaginal dryness
• perfumed soaps, washes, and any douches in and around your vagina
• do not put creams or lotions like petroleum jelly inside your vagina as it can cause an infection
• do not use moisturizers that are not for your vagina
See your doctor
• you've had vaginal dryness for a few weeks and things you've tried yourself are not working
• vaginal dryness is affecting your daily life
• you have unusual discharge or bleeding from your vagina
• you have bleeding after sex or in between your periods
