Jack In
Jack in is an informal phrasal verb used in colloquial British English.
The meaning of jack in is to stop doing something. It is usually used in reference to a job. Particularly a job that you no longer enjoy doing or that you are bored with.
It is transitive, in that it needs an object, and it is separable, in that you can separate the verb, jack, from the particle, in, with the object. When the object is a pronoun it must go between the verb and the object.
Imagine you are doing a job that you really hate doing. You've been doing it for so long that you are completely bored with it. You might go home and announce:
I've had it with that job. I'm jacking it in tomorrow.
I'm jacking in my job tomorrow. It's so boring.
Perhaps you left your job some time before. Then you could say:
I jacked my job in because it was boring me silly.
I jacked in my job because it was driving me nuts.
You could offer some informal advice to someone using the phrasal verb, jack in. Perhaps your friend is complaining that she hates her job. You could say:
Why don't you jack it in and find yourself a better job?
You should jack it in and get yourself something better.
If I was you, I would jack in my job and find another one.
