You’ll Never Heal If You Don’t Know This About Trauma | Dr. Bessel van der Kolk. The Hidden Effects of Trauma & How It Shapes Your Life
Trauma isn’t just an emotional experience—it rewires your brain, affects your body, and can silently dictate your life without you even realizing it. In this video, we explore the deep and often overlooked consequences of trauma, why some of the safest countries talk about it the most, and how it impacts everything from childhood development to social behavior. If you’ve ever felt disconnected, numb, or trapped in past experiences, this video will help you understand why—and what you can do about it.

Summary with timestamp:
0:00 - Belonging as a Biological Instinct
Trauma isolates, but human connection is essential for healing. Belonging is not just a desire—it’s a biological instinct crucial for survival.

0:00 - 1:30 Why Trauma Conversations Are Increasing
Trauma has always existed, but discussions about it have become more common as people feel safer to talk about their experiences.

1:30 - 3:00 Is There More Trauma Today Than Before?
Surprisingly, there is less trauma today than in the past. However, increased safety allows for open discussions that were once suppressed.

3:00 - 4:30 The Overlooked Victims of Trauma
While much focus is given to soldiers, the most affected groups—abused children and women in domestic violence situations—often go unnoticed.

4:30 - 6:00 The Science of Human Connection
Humans are wired for communication and community. Trauma disrupts this natural instinct, leading to isolation and emotional disconnection.

6:00 - 9:52 How Trauma Affects Childhood Development
Unlike American children who face more academic pressure, kids in Finland and Korea engage in more play, fostering healthier emotional development.

A very special thanks to the speaker Dr. Bessel van der Kolk for sharing his knowledge with us.

I am a survivor of domestic violence and I can say we still have a long way to go. I got so much backlash when the relationship came to an end- I was blamed and shamed. It was so shocking. I was so traumatised by the relationship but was so very alone in trying to recover. 8 years on I am still recovering and finding support even from therapists has been very hard.

Good video The problem with trauma is nobody wants to hear about it and to become part of a group or a twelve step program has been very helpful for me

I am 70 - profoundly hard of hearing /deaf woman - isolation leads to emptiness feelings - and isolation because we are wired social primate beings ! And my healing journey began - I like to laugh - when I
“Fell Out into this World !” ( likely before that …considering …)

Trauma changes us in ways we don’t even realize. It can make us feel numb, disconnected, or even like we’re ‘nobody.’ But the truth is—you are somebody. You are not alone in this. Healing starts with understanding, and this video might just open your eyes to things you never noticed before. Watch now, and if this resonates with you, drop 'I am healing' in the comments. Let’s support each other. #trauma, #mentalhealth, #healing, #selfgrowth, #youarenotalone

I just discovered I had PTSD since I was a child. I'm 55 years old & I always struggled. Cancer triggered PTSD which is just awful. I'm finally on the right meds & therapy. I will start a 12-week recovery program soon. I finally have hope.

I’m trying to come out of five years of isolation after a traumatic experience happened and opened Pandora’s box of my severe childhood scars. It’s so lonely being in isolation and constantly living in fight flight, and connecting is extremely important. Thank you for having me in such an amazing community. Australia is a beautiful country but I would love to be heard when I say Australia is behind when it comes to finding resources and supports. I have used 🎨 painting for my healing ❤️‍🩹 Thank you 🙏

I am healing and the body really does keep score. I’m paying attention and staying in the moment, working on being wiser each day I’m blessed with. D’ohm.

I am being re-traumatized by the very systems in place that are supposed to be helping me. I am disabled with multiple chronic illnesses and had all my IL DRS in-home support services yanked out from under me last Fall. I have also contacted the Department of Aging in DuPage County IL and they too are not providing me services nor following through on appointments etc. I am now dealing with malignant neglect as these agencies are playing CYA games. They are aware that I have very little food in my house and am living in literal garbage.

How am I supposed to heal when my most basic needs are not even being met?!

I started healing in 2008 when I became aware of my trauma but only understood its depth in 2020 when the Covid lockdowns imposed by my government took me out of the world and forced me to look inwards.
