This sort of explores the idea that Jormungandr is eating his own tail. Instead of literally like the myth, he is metaphorically doing it in the paradox.

Now the part from the first game where Jorm tells Atreus "you look familiar" makes 100x more sense

The Jormie we see in Midguard is like a time traveller from the future.
1. Young Jormie gets 'born' via Atreus's magic
2. Grows big in a short while
3. Fights Thor at Ragnarok
4. Get's yeeted way back in time
5. Gets old and does God of War 2018 stuff
6. God of War 2022 starts and Jormie tells Atreus about Ironwood
7. Atreus goes to Ironwood does his magic on the new young Jormie

And so for a short amount of time between young Jormie's birth and Ragnarok there are two Jörmungandrs. The old Jormie from the future that is still chillin in Midgard, and the young Jormie that is about to follow in his footsteps.

Its called a Bootstrap paradox. When you go back in time to give yourself a coin, where did the coin originate from if your were always destined to get it from yourself? Same thing with the snake telling Artreus where to go.

It's a bootstrap paradox. Jormungandr tells Atreus where to go in order to ensure his own creation.

They mention this when they ask how Jormungandr got to Asgard when the midgard gate was already destroyed in the battle. New Jormungandr came through the Jotunheim gate in Asgard.

Frozen Jörmungandr in Midgard is the same one from 2018. He’s never moved. The one Atreus and Angrboda revive is the one at Ragnarok that’s sent back in time that will eventually just end up chilling in Midgard forever. So for older Jormie, Ragnarok already happened. It is interesting that he is the one that tells Atreus of Ironwood

Just say, it’s his own Timeline. There is no loop, Jormi is reborn as a Snake, grows as a Snake, fights Thor, gets flung into the past, meets a younger version of his “Maker” and just chills out in Midgard.

there was an AMA by one of the devs and apparently they are going to follow up on jormunganders experience through time, hopefully atreus journey to other mythologies to find the giants.

I love time paradoxes that just makes you think what the hell is happening.

Reminds me of the Song of Storms time paradox where the dude in the windmill created his own hell for his past self by teaching us the song that would torment him in the far future. Thus, no one knows who originally knew the Song of Storms since we inexplicably teach the song to past windmill dude who would teach us the song in the future timeline.
