Sarah Geronimo riffs & runs, vocal agility

For non-singers, they would just think that this is just a normal basic SHORT run because they can not sing, and they can not riff. But for real singers and riffers, they understand that this a VERY DIFFICULT run to execute despite it not even lasting "1 whole second".

Anyone who has ever tried riffing knows that hitting STRAIGHT DESCENDING LEGATO runs are really really hard. Straight legato scales with 5-6 continuous notes are actually one of the hardest kinds of runs to hit. It’s even harder to hit than the “Ego riff/run challenge” and the “Dangerously in Love challenge” that both contain even more notes and last for almost or more than 10 seconds. Just try hitting a fast straight descending legato run in less than 1 second with fluidity and precision, and you’ll find out how hard it really is to execute one.

What’s really amazing with what Sarah did here is that she hit the run in a Shirley Bassey level of chesty placement. Descending legato runs are already hard to hit in the first place, and they're even harder to hit when you are doing them in a full chesty midbelt. This is why you would notice most female singers transitioning to their falsetto’s, most of the time, to hit such runs with ease and precision. It’s actually A LOT easier to move your head voice in a fast linear motion than your chest voice, especially when you are in your middle register. Only few contemporary singers can effortlessly and consistently execute really fast straight legato runs while belting and projecting their mids at the same time. Particularly Whitney Houston, Beyonce, and Kim Burrell to name some of those few singers. If not in their falsetto’s, most female singers try to access their lightest or softest registers to be able to execute a straight legato run safely and confidently.

What Sarah did here is really hard. Some singers would even take a short pause to change their placement or add 2-3 notes before the note for “bwelo” purposes. Some would even add 1-2 notes in the end of the run for “safety purposes” so they could cover it up in case they don’t hit the straight legato run precisely. But in Sarah’s case, she casually riffed that part with such power, agility, and precision in just a single phrase with no “bwelo”. Seriously, you would RARELY hear female singers, especially LOCAL singers, doing straight legato runs in a shirley bassey placement of midbelt because it’s really risky, and it’s hard to move your midbelts in a fast linear direction while also punching and projecting them so forwardly w/ such openness, fullness, beltiness, and forwardness.

This is one of Sarah’s natural strengths as a contemporary mezzo. Other singers might be able to manufacture fullness and depth in their voices, but the areas of their natural agility in legato runs would always reveal their true natural voices and tones.

They keep calling Sarah an ABOVE AVERAGE singer with just DECENT agility. But HONESTLY, I’ve already heard A LOT of runs Sarah did effortlessly that many Filipina singers, they call “GREAT/AMAZINGLY AGILE”, are struggling to hit. Besides, Sarah also has the MOST DIVERSE kind of agility in the country. You would hear different kinds and shapes of agility in different registers of her voice. Her agility as a contemporary mezzo is in fact most consistent and effortless in her midbelts, lower registers, and her supported head voice. She has definitely IMPROVED and DEVELOPED her agility through the years. This is definitely not just DECENT or ABOVE AVERAGE. Only non-singers who can not riff would claim that Sarah’s present agility is just decent or above average. She’s literally doing effortless straight legato runs in full, powerful, & projected midbelts. How many local female singers can effortlessly and consistently do that? Seriously.
