Cynthia Lynn is clearly the finest violinist west of the Mississippi. I am honored to be able to play a duet with her.
The Ave Maria is one of the most beloved compositions in the world, but it almost didn't happen. The guitar part is my adaptation of Bach's 1st Prelude from the Well Tempered Clavier. More than a century after Bach, Charles Gounod improvised a violin melody over Bach's Prelude. The improvisation was transcribed by Gounod's father-in-law and published in 1853 as "Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach." In 1859, Jacques Heugel noticed the Latin text of the Ave Maria perfectly coincided with the music, and he published the music and prayer together. The Prelude was first adapted for guitar by Segovia in the 20th century.
