So what bothered me about the movie is, why do the Barbie’s have different representations of body types, but the Kens don’t?….

I think a big part of the problem when movies try to put "pro feminism" messages in them, is that they can _only_ see womanhood and femininity in a Hollywood/Big City lens. Nearly every time I see modern media crying about the struggles women have to go through, all I can think is... I've never had to deal with that. Nor has any woman that I know personally. It makes me think that I'm sure glad I don't live where they live, if women have to face the kind of struggles they say they do.

Not to mention, Hollywood can't seem to help itself but to put down traditional femininity. The pendulum has swung pretty far in the other direction. It's fine if women want to be doctors or lawyers, but can't a woman also just want to be a housewife? IDK.

You know, the whole hullabalooo around Barbie movie reminds me the release of another very pink and very female centered movie release - Sofia Coppolas Marie Antoinette. The tabloids (like Daily Mail) tore the movie absolutely to shreds. If you are interested I think you could still read the articles from the online database (I remember I read them online).
Honestly, I think these movies are analysed and overanalysed just because they are pink, frilly and really not that deep and frivolous. I am not watching Marie Antoinette for 600th time because of accurate historic representation or Legally Blonde for courtroom advice. I just genuinely hope that we will not get like new Barbie movie every year now, as Hollywood likes to serialise and beat to death all good things.

I find it disappointing that they just had all the female dolls be Barbies. (Except Midge, who doesn't get to do anything except get weird looks for being pregnant.) No Skippers, Teresas or Kellys. I would have liked them to include Barbie's friends and sisters.

Also, the feminist messaging was so heavy handed it came across almost as a parody.

@LanaMarie, have you seen The Witcher Series, if you have what are your thoughts on the show and costumes?

My mom and sister watched it and enjoyed it a lot but my sister did mention the feminisem being a bit much even for her.

"It tries to be so many things and it ends up beaing not a lot." My thoughts exactly. I was really dissapointed after watching it. I can say I felt even deceived by trailers. Second half of the movie was really boring.
About that speech. Yeah, I can see how it could applied to everyone, but it surely was presented as applying only to woman.
However, for me the worst scene in that movie was the chase scene in Mattel office. It was so out of place, that it was cringier even than that speech.

I feel that Gloria's speech was somehow.. old. I don't resonate with it at all. Maybe 'cause I live life where I am genuine to myself and don't care much about others opinions about what to wear or what to do for example. Ofc some people still can find these problems in their lives but for me those just seem outdated.
I liked your video, I would love to see your video where you make this dress :). I have not seen the actual movie, maybe I'll watch it someday (tho, the plot didn't sound interesting).

I'm kinda baffled but also in awe at the conflicting narratives running throughout this movie. Is it a bastion of feminist propaganda or a scathing critique? It feels like satire and at the same time sincere. I believe it was made to be a totally woke message and there's certainly quite a bit of misandry, yet I saw things that made me stop and think this movie is actively undermining it's own message. Like maybe there's a second narrative where it's actually pointing out that men and women are different but complementary and that we should all just be humans.

That being said, the Matchbox twenty song the Kens sing on the beach actually provides some interesting insight to the movie that people are missing. Ken sings a song that was written about a woman who emotionally manipulates her boyfriend who just wants to be loved. Right as he's singing, the Barbies plot to crush the "peak happiness" of the Kens... by using their feminine wiles. Doing to the Ken's what men have allegedy done to women. This whole movie ends with Barbies essentially plotting a sexual revolution to take power away from the Kens... and then when Barbie comes to the real world, she visits her gynecologist. That's a pretty messed up ending for a movie that otherwise had some good messages about motherhood and the experience of being human.

Great review. I agree with you, the movie tries so hard to be very deep and it's really not that profound. Ryan Gosling steals the show, his comedic timming is impecable. I also enjoyed much more the first half than the second. The speech was super cringe I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so. The ending going to the doctor seemed to me very silly and Im not sure what they were going for with it.

I feel this is a lazy review... Barbie is far from being a masterpiece, but the movie doesn't have the deep pro-feminism narrative people want to see. It's a plastic movie with a frivolous version of the hero's journey.

And Gloria's "cringy speak" is just an anti-label speak. They have "stereotypical Barbie, " the "president Barbie, " the "Nobel prize Barbie, " "pregnant Barbie, " and "just Ken"... All labels. And even adults use labels to categorize people (more so if we're talking about conservative adults). Since Gloria is the one that was not happy with her life and was having negative thoughts about it, it would be weird that the gen-Z daughter with little experience of adult life makes that speech. Self-discovery is all that the movie is; that's why it doesn't have a close ending. As long as you live, you never stop discovering things that you adapt in the way you think, the way you speak, the way you dress, the way you present yourself, and so on...

And why does Barbie have to apologize to Ken? He literally stalked her, went to the real world because he thought that would make him look better than the other Kens, then left her alone in the real world, took her house, brainwashed the other Barbies, made a stupid battle with the other Kens. And why? Because Barbie was not into him? Ken is the kind of dude obsessed with a girl to the point of taking toxic actions to make the girl just pay attention to him. And then Barbie has to apologize to him (he never apologizes for anything, btw).

In reality, Barbie and Ken are not counterparts. Ken needs to have a background story to be a counterpart. He's an accessory. Unfortunately, Ken has had less of a variety of roles and been more limited in his development and personality compared to Barbie, always selling himself relative to the Barbie variant. You can have all the Barbies in the world without having (or wanting) a Ken. And I really want a movie about Ken now, with a story and background without Barbie; that really would be interesting

Sorry but I just disagree with this review, and I think it’s a review that many people have if they tried to see solutions for society that the Barbie movie was trying to get across, instead of recognizing the point of the film, and why it’s so brilliant.

The Barbie movie is a satire that rips apart the patriarchy… that’s the point, that’s the whole point of the film. It also includes many very special and clever feminist lines, that are being presented in a way that will be seen by a lot of people. For a Hollywood movie, that’s amazing!! Comedy is almost always rooted in toxic masculine ideals, with most comedic lines in movies being based in sexism, so it was really refreshing to see a Monty Python style ripping apart of sexism and the patriarchy.

The film also wasn’t anti-men, and if people thought it was they completely missed the whole idea
It’s simply anti- patriarchy

Now the ending, I would like to say, is an absolutely fantastic one imo… Barbie, a pink, plastic, cellulite fearing, heel wearing, fake idea of what woman should be, decides to go to the real world, and become a real woman, embracing cellulite, being proud of her vagina (why she went to the gynecologist) and accepting to live as a woman despite everything, because being a woman is beautiful, I think it’s a really special ending that shows woman they can be proud of their body, and their womanhood, which I’m sorry, just is very difficult in the patriarchy we live in

Also, how is literally overthrowing the patriarchy not a good ending, isn’t that like, what we should be doing in the real world, this was just a comedic ridiculous version of that which was amazingly entertaining, and showed that what men go through is really not as bad as woman

The irony of the criticism is that you are also trying to be an expert in linguistics, a film critic and tell us something about costumes at the same time. Not all of it works equally well. If you criticize a film with a box office of 1.44 billion dollars, you're welcome to do so, but at least you shouldn't mess up the summary of the content. The events in the Barbie world serve as model observations for the oppressive nature of a matriarchy and later a patriarchy. The actions of Ken and Barbie are clearly exaggerated, as in a good joke, so that you can only misunderstand them if you want to misunderstand them. Barbie works because Barbie from the center of society makes fun of the woke and right-wing tendencies. If you don't see the wink in the parts where it's about matriarchy and patriarchy, you should question your own bubble. I like most of your channel. You fucked up the review of Barbie the movie because you expected the wokeness and therefore wanted to see it, but it's not really there.

I wish the movie had more attractive men and women. Margo rabbit is ok but someone like Reese is a better barbie. Can u believe it that they almost had that chubby chick as barbie? Forgot her name. Totally would not fit.
