I made a game very similar to this in Java for a CS class a week ago. I didn't have an engine, but I can certainly relate to the code spaghetti problem. I sort of ended up throwing encapsulation out the window and not really making things expandable, but I certainly learned what not to do. In fact your whole experience with making your first game is incredibly similar to mine lol. To anyone planning to make their first game: don't just jump right in. It will lead to your code being incredibly messy and bad. You need to have a plan, not just of the game's features, but of how you will implement them.

The first thing that can easily make your game more fun could be some visual effets when an ennemy is slain and just little animations here and there ! If you lack game ideas or inspiration i suggest binge watching game jams as they have a lot of original games ! If you want some help with game visual design and general graphics i'd be happy to help :)

You can try add some variety textures on a ground and small animation for grass... For a better environment. Now I'm also trying to make a small game on this engine... But it's very slow, because it's hard for me to concentrate on one thing and my thoughts fly in different directions :D
