I LOVE YOU // 2020 - 2021

I really enjoyed playing this tune on the Fibes kit. The recording lent itself to the sound of the kit and I got a pretty decent recording right away.

I kept the combo drummer in mind, especially during fills. A combo player on a combo kit, driving a full Big Band. That was the job.

This is a pretty heavy chart for the age group, but not impossible. Spend time only playing swing time through the entire recording. Make sure you don't get lost or thrown off easily. Grab your pencil, mark the harder music. Pay attention to the "figures" written above the staff. Understand who plays them and don't feel like you have to play every one on the chart. Use your judgment and play out w/ the ensemble when you can, but keep it simple.

Record yourself, LISTEN TO JAZZ, look up this tune anywhere, there are countless versions.

Steal what you can here and try to develop a voice of your own. Listen to your sound and balance that snare. Stay within your limits, don't blow it w/ a foolish, all of a sudden fill. Don't lose focus. Think ahead, memorize the sax, trumpet, trombone and rhythm section parts. Understand where they happen in the music.
