I Took a Picture of the ORION NEBULA Up Close...

Photographing the Orion Nebula!

The Orion Nebula is one of the brightest nebulae in the night sky and is visible to the naked eye. It lies 1,500 light-years away from Earth and can be found just south of Orion's belt in the constellation Orion.

This magnitude 4 interstellar cloud of ionized atomic hydrogen contains a young open cluster of four primary stars known as the Trapezium. M42 is a fantastic beginner astrophotography subject to capture with your DSLR camera and telescope.

The final image includes 45 x 4-minutes in h-alpha, and 40 x 2-minutes in broadband RGB. I also applied a subtle layer of existing data (shorter RGB exposures) to blend into the core.

Thank you for watching, and clear skies!

I don't comment often but this shot was one of the best I've ever seen. 👍🏻😯

I am feeling really down mentally and I saw this notification. It cheered me up a bit. I still have to wait 24 minutes tho for the premiere to start. But thanks for all these uploads, I love them. You got me into astronomy and it has helped a lot with my mental health.

I have to say I truly enjoy and learn a lot from each of your videos. The downside in watching your videos is like home shopping. You view the million-dollar homes first (your videos) and then when it comes to actually make the purchase, it's just a modest small home that needs some fixing up. I have to remind myself that I am not tech-savvy and struggle with software programs for pic editing. And being disabled I don't have the ability to deal with long hour cold temp photography in the winter.

I became Starstruck just a few months ago after a visit to Cherry Springs. It has been such a journey!! At age 73 I didn't think there was anything left that could so inspire & capture my interest. Since then I have been looking at stars & discovered the fuzzy stars on Orion's sword. I then got a Dwarf Smartscope on Cyber Monday, and have been capturing my first images of this nebula (which totally looks like a bird to me!!) Your video is incredible. I'm so impressed with your rig & your dedication. Thanks & clear skies!

Holy crap! I've seen a lot of pics of Orion but this takes the cake! I'd love to see the processing workflow on this, at least as far as the Canon goes (I haven't talked myself into buying a telescope and ccd cam yet).
Outstanding job! Clear skies to all!

Saw the Orion Nebula for the first time today with my telescope. Seriously one of my proudest moments as an amateur star-gazer! Must say I'm grateful that you are making these videos. Cheers from Sweden.

Excellent video and image capture of M42. Kudos to you for braving the chilly weather. I live further South in the USA (about 39 deg N). It it’s been too cold for me on the rare clear nights here!!!
