SHIMANO 105 Di2 is here

In 1982, Shimano 105 was launched to the cycling world, slotting beneath Dura-Ace and Shimano 600 Series (later rebranded Ultegra). The new road group quickly gained popularity as a budget-friendly platform that delivered high-level functionality trickled down from higher-end models. In the ensuing decades, Shimano 105 was updated seven times, each iteration providing ever-improving technology in an approachable package.

This year, as Shimano 105 celebrates its 40th anniversary, the ultimate every-rider road group is getting the ultimate upgrade. Introducing the new Shimano 105 Di2 R7100 Series electronic shifting drivetrain, which once again delivers easier operation, increased reliability, and less maintenance in a more attainable package. Indeed, this eighth version of Shimano 105 signals a new day for the component line while staying true to the group’s original mission to bring affordable performance to more riders.

The price is insane! The old r8070 costs the exact same retail price and still 1KG lighter. Requesting Hammerhead to remove Di2 compatibility and now this?

Heavier, less aero, less options and more expensive! I just can’t wait!!

It completely prices out the market shimano are aiming at. You're talking an at least £3k bike to be 105 di2 equipped, that is outside the affordability of your average rider. That is amateur racer territory. And with the different spec and quirks to the new Ultegra and Dura-Ace, racers are not the target market with 105 di2. I have an older equipped 105 5750 groupset on a 7 year old bike that cost £750 at the time. Still works great. Bad move by Shimano here I think.

Its too expensive. R8100 is more logical then R7100

Loved all my mechanical Ulegras & 105s over the years, the pricetag you are now trying to force me into is absurd.
Goodbye Shimano.

I clipped in for my first race in 1987. Since my first 105 bike I have owned every iteration of Dura Ace plus assorted Ultegra groups... You can take your electronic only, disc brake only, overpriced crap and stick it. I will NEVER buy another Shimano groupset.

I love how everyone in the comments are absolutely trashing the groupset
more people are becoming aware of the bs some companies pull, sadly people will still buy this new groupset so whatever

In 2017 or so, me and my fellow cyclist friends talking about the future of shimano GS, while joking around we said we will wait for sora di2. Now that it's 105, so i think it's not something impossible to see it come down to at least tiagra lv. in the future.
But somehow, now i more interested to wait for Chinese brands GS and see their improvements that seems quite fast and solid.

The funniest thing is that they still try to keep this image up that electronic shfiting is some kind of brand new cutting edge rocket science tech and that's why it costs 1000 USD more than mech.
All the kinematics are the same, you just pretty much have batteries, motors, a simple computer and some wireless tech. None of this shit is worth that money, maybe 150 € increased cost in parts. Upfront RND costs for the tech have been brought in ages ago. So the markup is insane. Also in general you should expect tech to get cheaper over time, but in this business prices never go down. So thats the new standard for 105 and it will only increase in price for the next iterations.

Very nice, but too late. Or ruther Shimano's action killed this group set before it was launched. How they removed Di2 support from Hammerhead head units is just too ugly. Competition is all fine and great, but there are limits to how companies should compete. Only thing as a consumer is to boycott Shimano stuff and that is what I’m doing. I will not get a new bike with Shimano group set.
I don’t even use the Hammerhead head unit but that stunt directly hit Shimano’s user base. You may think that it does not concern me so why should I care? Well I think everyone should care about such attacks from leading companies!
I will BOYCOTT Shimano!

I’ve wanted this for a long time but you’ll need to lower the price if you want to complete with SRAM Rival etap!

Why everything has to be electric nowadays? I imagine in 5 years you have to connect to an app with all of your personal information just to get the bike to work

Let me know when you restore functionality to the Karoo. Until then no more money to Shimano.

i don't understand how they can say electronic shifting means you can shift under load, whereas mech can't. This makes no sense. Whether a derailluer is cable or servo-motor actuated has nothing to do with the fact that chains don't like to change gears under significant tension, like when under load. What am i missing

Sweet, another groupset that won't link up with my hammerhead 2. Ps any word on if these cranks are glued? Are they likely to fail with no warranty recourse in the same way as your previous generations of Ultegra and Dura-Ace? Cheers
