Alexis, It depends. For example all salts containing ammonium (NH4+) are soluble. That means regardless of the anion, if it contains ammonium it would be broken apart.Same goes for nitrate (NO3-). If the anion is acetate, it would be soluble unless paired with silver. We present this as the rule for our first year students.There are possible exceptions but we stick to the main polyatomic ions that you would encounter in most first year problems. Do you have an example you are wondering about?

Sorry 25sweetspicy that it took me this long to get back to you. We present this material in first year chemistry, to high school sophomores. We cover it in detail in AP chemistry.

Question, why does PbI2 not separate into Pb + I2 ?

what if one polyatomic ion is aqueous and the other is insoluble do you break it down or keep it as one whole?
