ABRSM Grade 3 Music Theory Section M Part 1 General Exercises with Sharon Bill

Welcome to my Music Theory Tutorials. In this music theory lesson I will guide you through ABRSM Music Theory in Practice Grade 3 Chapter 13 Part 1. In this tutorial I give tips on how to best learn and revise all the material covered in the ABRSM Grade 3 Music Theory in Practice workbook. I help you to work through the first General Exercise and show you where to refer back to in your ABRSM Grade 1, 2 and 3 workbooks to revise the necessary topics.

I have been teaching music theory for over twenty five years and I’ll help you every step of the way - just as if you were sitting next to me. I have provided free a PDF information booklet with all the information you’ll need to work through the Grade 3 ABRSM Music Theory in Practise workbook, available in A4 and US Letter.

Music Theory is an integral part of any musician’s studies. Understanding the structures behind the music we play supports our practise and performance. Even if you don’t play an instrument understanding how music is constructed helps us to be a more informed listener.

I LOVE music theory! It’s like peeling back the layers of the music to look at the nuts and bolts that hold it all together and make the music work.

Hi Sharon, thanks for another helpful vid. In the last question (i) how would I know to copy out the anacrusis as well? It just says 'Transpose the first four bars' I just copied out from number bar number 1! :D

Also in (i) the note marked '*' is a tie, I have copied it out onto the stave with it's tie, is that correct?

Just a quick question. For exercise 1 question h, can the tonic triad also be in bar 1 because there’s c, b flat and a flat.

Please for Bar 3 your transposition was hard to understand. t doesnt seem right.shouldn't the first note be before the first line

I think that in question h, you have missed that there is also a tonic triald of A flat major in the last two notes of bar 6 and the first note of bar seven. I do not understand why you did not do a correction for this, as your on e was E A C and mine was A C E, making my answer a much more presise one. In addition, there might be hundreds of kids who have my answer that think their wrong but their not because of you.
