Tanzania's 2.9 Billion Julius Nyerere Dam Set to Mitigate East Africa's Energy Woes - Tanzania is about to light up East Africa with its billion-dollar electricity project. East Africa, particularly Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia is on the brink of a substantial increase in electricity provision with the impending commissioning of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP). Highlighted during the 16th Meeting of the Sectoral Council of Ministers on Energy in Arusha on February 13, ministers emphasized the transformative impact of the $2.9 billion project, set to generate 2,115MW along the Rufiji River.

The Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) is expected to significantly enhance East Africa's electricity supply upon its activation. This initiative aligns with Tanzania's power master plan, aimed at interconnecting power grids across Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia.
“Energy plays a critical role in industrial development and investment promotion… and this project is a milestone that will reduce the deficit of electricity not only in Tanzania but in the entire region,” stated Shaib Hassan Kaduara, Minister of Water, Energy and Minerals of Zanzibar.

This is what we call an African success story for south-south cooperation. This story need to be widely circulated among Africans, when African countries (Tanzania and Egypt) cooperate to help each others. For the last seven thousand years, Egyptians have been mastering water management, irrigation projects, engineering dams (i.e., Naser High Dam), and mega constructions that last forever and challenge the time i.e., the Great Pyramids of Giza :) The Egyptian consortium managed to accomplish this gigantic dam in less than four years. Congratulations to all our brothers and sisters in Tanzania. Kudus to Egyptian engineers and experts. Africa finally is in the right path for rapid development and progress.

As a Kenyan, I have to commend Tanzania for such an ambitious project that will help boost its electricity supply and hopefully reduce power outages in their country! However, keep in mind that Tanzania’s population is currently 67 million and with the addition of the 2100MW from this dam the total installed capacity of Tz will be around 4000 MW which in the grand scheme of things is still not enough! For example, Kenya currently has a population of 55 million and total installed capacity of 3300 MW and still it’s not enough! We need to invest in massive energy projects in the Gigawatts territory if we want to be energy efficient and sufficient!

This is what the beginning of unification can bring. We must learn from their divide and conquer tactics and grow away from them to ensure the future progress for our generations.

I dont want to put a damper on things but with climate change and inconsistency of rainfall in africa i hope afica isnt relying too much on hydro . Also as we’ve already seen it can cause conflict with countries downstream . I’m no expert but it would seem logical that africa uses solar for daytime consumption as sunlight is africas biggest resource not water and alternative base load supplies for night time consumption could come from hydro, geothermal and wind . Lets hope this doesnt turn into a corruption fiasco as seen in south africa

Was it not the same project that will leave another country without water? I honestly cant recall which project it was that would result in water never reaching distant lands owned by another country. I am sure someone hre knows what that is called and where it is

Geothermal may be termed green energy, but in actuality it is not that green at all, solar and wind is.

There is no entity as "sub-saharan" Afrika! Yurugu made that up! Channels that are pro Afrika should not repeat that insulting european narrative! Afrikans never created such a term to designate or describe any portion of their homeland, Afrika! Lets stop pushing european subtle and not so subtle propoganda to separate Afrika! "Egypt and Afrikan countries!"

Why aren't African engineers building tunnels and dams and bridges in Africa? Why must they always depend on outsiders to build fir ghem? Build universitirs that teach engineering. Africans are as intelligent and capable as any other people. We shouldn't jave to depend on Egypt.

Egypt wants to export electricity to Europe but didn't want Ethiopia to build a dam si that it could generate power. Smh
