People think ASL is hand gestures but it’s actually a real language with culture

"It means you're a jackass" is the answer to their question

This has actually happened to me before. I learned ASL when I was younger, and some a-hole made fun of me for signing to my classmate (who grew up with ASL and was hard of hearing). He made up signs, moving his hands in random ways that were really offensive to me and my friend. It's a real language and deserves the respect any other language has.

My favourite response " How dare you say that! And in public!? Shame on you" and then just walk off

My roommate in college. She didn't mean anything bad from it, but it still drove me up the wall.

It has a history, a development!!! The entire deaf community has a STORIED history that has lasted AT LEAST 100 years. Tell people it is based off of English, but used with the context of French grammar, because the man who invented ASL was originally from France!! I learned this in my ASL class a long time ago!! It was really really cool!

I would say,

"Why are you signing that you want to send my grandma away to Russia and then sacrifice her to Harry Styles?"

I'm learning ASL and am so proud to know some of the signs you're using. I have so much respect for you for calling out the people who are unkind physically or online. 🤟🤟

I started learning ASL earlier this year in February, because the deaf ed program was coming to our school the following year, and two deaf girls were going to be on the cheer team with me, so I wanted to be able to communicate and become friends with them! Now we’re besties 👯‍♀️! Your videos inspire me! ❤😊🙏🏼 Love you tons!

Hehe I always feel the same way when I meet people & they find out I’m deaf. First reaction is always “can you sign?” And then they want to learn sign from me. Just weird, but you get used to the reaction after a while

my only reaction would be "that's cool!" and clap in ASL which is the only thing I know besides Hi lmao

Rightt! I'm currently in my process of learning ASL and my mom is partly deaf so she has hearing aids and the doctor said in a few years it's gonna get worse so I wanted to learn ASL in honor of my mother so i can still talk to her because I usually talk a mile a minute. When I walked up to my grandma and tried to practice my ASL she started laughing at me and started to mock the language and like do a whole bunch of nonsense like huh 😭

I never ask "what does this mean" and make up some crap. I ask "how do i say this?" So i can learn.

My friend knew someone who was hard of hearing, so they learnt some sign language, and they taught me some sign language.

I know 4 swears, the sign for Bird, bear and cat, how to greet someone, how to thank someone, how to ask for someones condition (how is someone) and how to introduce yourself.

They also taught me the ASL Alphabet so i could fingerspell because i dont know a lot of words.
I like your videos a lot because you dont act like your different from anybody else because you do sign language and you dont act like people who dont know sign language are less.
Your videos are also fun to watch because you are funny.
Thank you

There were three hearing-impaired students in my third-grade class; no one would play with them because they didn't know how to use signs, but I felt awful and typed down everything I wanted to say to them so I could have my discussions with them. A few days later, the school announced the establishment of a sign language club. I spent my whole free time learning sign, while the other club members and I also learned a few words and the alphabet. I was overjoyed to communicate with my pals who could sign. I gained self-introduction skills, and I was even given a sign name! Much of what I learnt I still know! I always stop people making fun of the language and tell them how it’s offensive since they don’t know. I love showing people how I introduce myself in sign and it’s such a fun experience!
