For those who think this is stupid or boring or too slow -- bear in mind this is a re-creation, not the real thing. The real races featured severe injuries and even death for both the horses and the charioteers -- which made the sport exciting for the crowd. And sometimes fights would break out in the crowd itself. As this is a family event and a re-creation, the idea is probably not to maim or kill horses in front of the kids -- or, for that matter, to have families cheer as charioteers get trampled to death underneath the hooves of racing horses. So it is obviously a very tiny venue compared to the Circus Maximus, and the horses are going very very slow so that no horse and no person will be injured. If you want to see a great re-creation, watch the 1950s Ben-Hur which is probably one of the best attempt to truly re-create a chariot race (including the speed).

The fact that 2 out of 4 of these chariots broke during this simple, rather slow race shows just how brutal and dangerous the real race would be! In the real thing charioteers would even die during these spectacles!

This is actually very entertaining to watch, even without all the dangerous thrilling maneuvers they did in ancient rome.

The way you can't really tell who is winning, and how they seem to be able to turn the tables is very unpredictable
