Wagner - Tannhäuser (Overture) - Cyprien Katsaris Piano

The album indicates that Richard Wagner himself transcribed this to piano. As far as I know, this is the only recording of this version that exists.

Wagner's transcription is for human beings, whereas Liszt's version requires daemonic possession.

So sweet and fluent sound. By far the best Tannhäuser paraphrase i have ever heard in many aspects. Cyprien is one of the very few really important pianists of our time. Bravo MAESTRO!

This is almost more of a Classical version, whereas Liszt supreme knowledge of the keyboard treats the piano as a full orchestra in his transcriptions and paraphrases. Great playing by Katsaris as always!

I believe this is simply the piano reduction out of the the vocal score of the opera. Very happy to see that it's been recorded - and very well played by Mr. Katsaris

This is actually nowhere as hard as the Liszt transcription. I really, really like this one. It's more simplistic yet resembles the original piece more accurately. Great.

Actually the transcription resembles Liszt's version very much, in many sections even identical. It is highly likely that Wagner simplified Liszt's version for good sake. BTW, to introduce forgotten pieces is one of the merit of Mr. Katsaris which I respct a lot, as well as Hamelin
