DS9 (seasons 5-7) and Enterprise (seasons 3-4) are my favorites. Sisko is my favorite captain mainly because he's the most down to earth being a widower and single father as well as emissary to the prophets. Also he techincally dies, which I like. And he had the most badass ship.

Picard is the Federation ideal.
Sisko is the Federation reality.

Do a video of what you two think about each show, go a bit more in depth on each one. What exactly you both think on Enterprise, TOS, VOY. Basically focus on the shows you didnt mention too much. Also I would like to hear what you both think of some of the other Trek films like Generations, (which is personally my favorite) Voyage Home, Search for Spock, etc. Really enjoyed this video and your guys' conversation.

love all series and movies picked here, TNG got me into Trek but DS9 took it to another level for me, same with the movies 6 was a epic finish for the original cast and Beyound was the first new movie to capture the spirit of TOS series ..very underrated movie even thought i prefer older Trek for the most part

IMHO: DS9 and First Contact are "peak Star Trek" in terms of sheer quality. The other shows (TNG) and movies (TUC, WoK) certainly have their own awesome qualities, but I always come back to DS9 and First Contact at the end of the day. Generations is also kind of overlooked/underloved - that movie stuck with me, despite it's flaws.

It may sound odd but I usually prefer a cleaner camera style. Unless its really really good I would rather not have to think about it. I remember when watching Discovery for the first time with a friend there was a weird shot with the camera being under the ship then it flipping upward showing it off. It looked cool but it actually made my friend feel kinda sick and was a little jarring. Things like this in the right hands can make a movie of series but overuse *like lens flairs in movies cough cough* can bring down the whole experience rathen then improving upon it like it should.

The 'Sisko shouts at everyone' is great.

Deep Space 9 is duh best imo :)
Shame the characters never had to deal with the borg, that would've been interesting

It’s so interesting how “hated “ DS9 was at first, but how the perspective of YEARS has made it a beloved show....

I just finished watching DS9 from start to finish for the first time...
Easily the best Trek ever.
(TNG is a close second)

Rowan would you ever be interested in doing videos about Battlestar Galactica either original or remake or both? I've recently got into the series and loved it and would love to hear more people talk about it

Hi I am totally colorblind so I was interested to hear your comments on this. Probably like you I tend to guess colors based on experience so I have sort of a prototypical shade that I expect for each color so lighter and darker shades will always throw me off. so in terms of Star Trek I really don't think about color that much but I did notice for example how much darker all the sets seemed in Star Trek generations including much greater use of shadow and lighting. Similarly in the Kelvin timeline my main observation was just generally how intensely bright and white everything seem to me to be rather than previous versions.

Only Star Trek movies that weren't made with typical block buster budgets for it's day were The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock and The Motion Picture. TMP was one of the most expensive movies ever made to up that point at least in terms of nominal budget, another production budget running wild disaster from previous year, the Superman was even more expensive. Adjusted inflation, some 50's and 60's were more expensive, so TMP was probably somewhere around top 5 most expensive movies ever made when it was released. TWoK and TSfS were a medium budget movies for their day, but by later TOS cast movies and TNG movies they were back high budget territory.

It is just that modern blockbusters budgets have exploded in last two decades, there are like half dozen movies made prior to year 2000 on list of the most expensive movies ever made adjusted for inflation, only two of those made prior to mid 90's.

I love TNG and DS9, almost for exactly the reasons you guys disagree on them. TNG presents the Federation ideal at it's best, but can sometimes feel preachy in lesser episodes. DS9 presents the Federation ideal under pressure, so we can see the cracks where even the best ideals and hopes can't quite solve all the problems. Both of those present lots of material for storytelling, but very different stories.

Just finding your videos chief and they are all good. Just adding my two bits about deanna troi. I think her character (or lack therof) can be perfectly viewed in 1st contact. When she is on earth pished at the bar she is genuinly funny and likable, she shows as a counciler. But later the only job they could find for her to do is be the countdown lady for the pheonix launch. I like deanna I do... but she was bloody redundant.

Would you consider doing individual season reviews? Like the first few seasons of tng, voyager, ent and the final season of Babylon 5 were questionable. Although, they had some amazing episodes in those weaker seasons. It maybe a decent format to explore the nuances of each season :)
