Point
We see a different side to Curley’s wife in Chapter 5.
Evidence
She consoled him. "Don't you worry none. He was jus' a mutt. You can get another one easy. The whole country is fulla mutts."
Explanation
This quote tells us that she is trying to make Lennie feel better about killing the puppy. Before this chapter, we have only seen her presented as a sex object or being cruel to Crooks.
Zoom in
The use of the verb “Consoled” shows she is trying to comfort Lennie and the use of the adverb…
“Soothingly” gives the impression. We are almost seeing a maternal side to the character compared to the selfish character we have seen earlier in the novella.
Context
In this quote CW is also telling us what she think of people in the 1930s society. By saying you can get another “mutt” easily, she is saying that people are only looking after themselves and don’t worry about others. This may have to do with the economy during The Great Depression where people had to look after themselves and their own family. This is ironic as she will become one of the “mutts” when she is killed and no one seems to care.
