Thank you for touching on referrals! I’ve asked former bosses and group leads I’ve worked with for referrals and I usually make sure they are in management-type roles too. My referrals have gotten me call backs, phone and in-person (Zoom call) interviews. Referrals are just as important as the resume and cover letter.

Joining a company you love in a lower-leveled position like Support and working your way via connections and consistent work is definitely a viable path from my experience! Took a little longer for me to get to a SWE position, but I didn't have to mention O(n) even once in my final interview which was nice :D

The company I work for has a referral candidate pool. We can upload resumes of people we refer, no questions about how we know them. It's up to the company to make sure they fit the role they decide to interview them for.
