It’s worth mentioning that enemies stay quiet when they’re alone.

F.E.A.R. aka the only game where the random chatter of soldiers saying "flush him out" or "flank 'em" means they ACTUALLY are going to try to instead of trying to just "scare" you with the dialogue and have them go in a straight line.

When the soldier said "Where should I go?" that sentence really made me feel like it wants to live! I felt butterflies in my stomach! Best game ever!

Most people didn't realize how good the A.I. was because they abused bullet time, but it truly was incredible for a game in 2005. This needs to be in VR like a fish needs to be in water today.

Still have not seen AI on its level. The hit animations and ragodolls are so well done.

Playing fear without bullet time, i salute you sir.

My most unforgettable moment when it comes to fighting the Replica was when one of the soldiers killed me by karate-kicking a box.

Towards my face.

“What’s your status?”
...
“WHAT’S YOUR STATUS?”

The panic in his voice is so well done.

Something that I always loved about these guys is how they react when you shoot them. I have seen them fall flat out on their asses when you shoot them on their chest with a shotgun wich is something I consider realistic in this game considering that you are shooting someone with a bulletproof jacket on them. Or how they only splat blood when you shoot them on their exposed limbs and you can even injure them on their legs if you shoot them there, they will move much slower if you do. I find that a much better improvement from the HL1 grunts who barely flintch when you shoot them anywhere.

Ai in Destiny:
- Going circles around an object forever.
- Enemy peak when you reload or release aim.
- Teleport exactly before the bullet hit.

one of the few FPS game enemies that have a personality. Like, outside of the AI itself being good, the voice acting really sells them to me. The panic in their voices makes me almost feel bad for them

F.E.A.R. has by far the best soldier ai in game history
Those Call of Duties and Battlefields with npcs that are completly brainless and scripted. They can only barely take cover (mostly with head sticking out in the open), shoot and throw granades (wich never happens in practice).
If you play them on higher difficulties you just trial and error.

Maddening to think that games have never moved past this point. This game is over 15 years old, nothing has came close in terms of a.i we've been going backwards since.

“What’s your status?”

*one replica doesn’t respond.*

“What’s your status!?”

This game really knows how to make these soldiers act so human, even as puppet clone soldiers.

I believe there are three things happening. 1) The game's engine is feeding them the same real-time directional mouse-look info that it uses to give you jump scares; 2) the enemy AI knows what "cover" is; 3) The enemy AI knows when it is in your view.

By programming them to leave your view using "cover" while simultaneously finding a new angle to shoot from, they are in a constant state of flank. They're basically Pac Man ghosts with guns.

The tactic of running up on you from a blind spot in order to shoot you point blank is something I have only ever seen tournament paintball players do.

I fucking love how dynamic the Replicas are. They'll flank you, rush you if they have the numbers, search the perimeter in suspicion like a flashlight or a window that's suddenly broken, and much, much more. They have meaningfully dynamic combat chatter, and then callout things like Pointman's easy wiping of a squad or tactics they'll do. Gotta love how they also have *fear* when their numbers are low. I fucking love this game, so so much. The best part of this game is how much of a glass cannon PM and the Replicas themselves are. You can get easily overpowered if you don't use the arena to your advantage, or cower when you take them out suddenly. The way combat is spaced out too enchances both the power fantasy of eliminating a squad of highly trained soldiers, *but* also enhances how much of a threat the enemies are. After all, they easily overpowered the ATC security the moment they were activated.

Totally agree that the A.I. in the game FEAR from year 2005 was awsome and still beats any modern A.I. in attack tactics.
I wished Insurgency Sandstorm would have such a good A.I.
