Every high school art student should watch this video. Fear is a real obstacle to learning. Planning a second version/attempt transforms "mistakes" into lessons and encourages experimentation, growth and confidence. Acknowledging and accepting your own interpretation of an image frees the artist from slavish perfectionism. Brava!

just like piano! With music you practice way more than you perform, but with watercolour you tend to perform way more than you practice. Like you do the movements that will be captured in your final painting without rehearsing them, which means the mistakes in the process are all right there in the final work. Which is part of its charm for sure! Lots of people can improvise on piano and make the mistakes into something more beautiful, but if you're stuck and you're getting frustrated, there is often a lot of ground to be gained by practicing and rehearsing the specific challenges of one painting! It's good to cross train with art haha it helps you think of new ways to tackle obstacles you're stuck on. With piano, you learn a trillion songs written and choreographed carefully by someone else, and you get to understand how they work, then after you've asimilated the concepts on a really deep level, in your brain and in your body, then you can suddenly improvise by using your skills in new ways because you've made them your own, and it's so free and fun.

Your videos never disappoint, and I always watch the whole thing. Like a good movie, I cannot wait for the next "scene". Your photography, talent, knowledge, and excellent speaking really gives the viewer an outstanding experience.

JOKE: Me: I can fit all of my art supplies in one box. My husband: Stop calling our house a box. 🤣

QUESTION: How does one avoid using a detailed drawing as too much of a "crutch", turning it into a coloring book or paint by the numbers approach? (As opposed to a more creative, spontaneous approach.) I hope I expressed that well.

Wonderful tips! Thank you 🎉. I love “ paint it twice”… I used to run away from ever doing this as I assumed I would get bored, not realizing how much I would learn, how much the image might improve or change in a new direction or how relaxed I would become as I knew the subject matter and what mistakes I did not want to repeat. I could watch you paint negative shapes all day… mesmerizing. ❤

Thanks for the great tips, Anna! I challenged myself recently to join your Patreon group. I love your use of color and layering, but the level of detail is intimidating. I appreciate the reminder to simplify if I’m feeling overwhelmed and also to make it my own. I feel like I’ve failed if it doesn’t look the same as yours so I will try to give myself permission to make mistakes and add my own flair. I appreciate your encouragement 😊.
