The Jules de Grandin tales are excellent. I think there is a definite place for them, not only in the time they were written, but also in a not so distant future. I think they are being rediscovered fondly among modern readers. Who knows? Maybe we'll get a television series someday.

Read a couple of Quinn shorts, Pledged to the Dead and Bloodflower. Both Jules De Grandin really enjoyed them and has a nice dark atmosphere.

Those covers are great. That’s a lot of stories! I’ve not read Quinn before but I’ll give him a try! Thanks for introducing him to us! Oh! Just found Pledged to The Dead, a Jules de Grandin story, on Project Gutenberg- with illustrations!

I have the first in physical book form. The other 4 came up on sale at various times on the Kindle. I picked those up then.

I like Seabury Quinn, as well. I haven’t read a lot of his stuff yet, mostly because it isn’t exactly readily available. I may have to try getting these fancy editions you are showing. Looks like there may be paperback editions coming soon. There were quite a few enjoyable, if not great, writers in Weird Tales. Another I like, although I have only read a couple of his stories, is Nictzin Dyalhis. I first read a story of his because it was included in an old mass market paperback Weird Tales anthology. He didn’t write too many, but there was recently a collection of most of his stories published, so I picked that up and plan to read it soon.

I always enjoy hearing about the pulp authors and other writers who get ignored because they aren’t literary enough. Not every story needs to be an allegory for the political climate of Russia in the 1870s. It is perfectly fine for a story to just be a good, fun story.

Hmm. Don't know if I've ever read him. I bet I have if he had short stories in other anthologies.
👍. Nicely done. 👍

I collected all six of those old Popular Library Jules de Grandin paperbacks published monthly between August '76 and January '77.
32 short stories were presented in five books, only one later than 1931. The remaining book contains the 6-part Devil's Bride serial
from 1932. The first de Grandin weird tale appeared two years after the first Continental Op story; from what I've read there is more
Op in Julie than Poirot/Holmes and it's fair to say Hammett influenced Seabury Quinn as much as Christie/Doyle. The stories have
not aged well because they embrace the hokiest tropes of melodrama but, like an eye-rolling episode of Dark Shadows, they're still
fun. Seabury placed 45 stories with Farnsworth between October 1925 and September 1931. 7 to 10 a year appeared in a six-year
span in Weird Tales, those were the cream of the crop. After 1933 the second half of the Jules de Grandin oeuvre trickled out until
September 1951

Audible has the first three volumes available as audio books. The first as been on my wishlist for years. I should probably push it up the queue.

Great review. I really enjoy your reviews on less well know authors and series from the past. Keep up the wonderful reviews.

This is my first time hearing about either Seabury Quinn or Jules De Gradin. The first volume of the Night Shade releases is REDICULOUSLY overpriced at the moment so I don't think I'll be picking it up soon, but the other volumes are more reasonable (if a bit overpriced). Thankfully "The Best of Jules de Granin" is only around $20, and that sounds more reasonable in my opinion. I'll be sure to check him out sometime.

I'd like to know how much the stories about Jules de Grandin are close to Weird Fiction. I'm a researcher on Weird and I study authors as Lovecraft, Machen, Chambers and Bierce. Now my studies led me to criminal literature and intermidiality, so one of my teachers said me to check on Quinn, but I don't know where to start and if Quinn did in fact write anything related to Weird Fiction.

I hadn't heard of this character/series so I looked it up and those Weird Tales covers for it were a bit scandalous; they look like the type of magazine that would be hidden behind the counter and you'd have to just know to ask for them. Your covers seem much more appropriate.
